Since Kentucky does not play its first exhibition basketball game until Thursday, I want to see what player or players excited you the most from the Blue-White Game?

Was it freshman Archie Goodwin with his explosiveness or freshman Willie Cauley-Stein with his overall play on both ends of the court?

Maybe it was the way junior Jon Hood came back from his knee injury?

Maybe it was the superb all-around play of junior guard Jarrod Polson?

How about the shooting/scoring of transfer Julius Mays?

Even though freshmen Nerlens Noel and Alex Poythress weren’t as sharp as I expected, maybe they were the ones to impress you.

Or what about sophomore Kyle Wiltjer or sophomore point guard Ryan Harrow?

For me, it was Mays, Cauley-Stein and Polson that made the biggest impressions on Blue-White night. But now I want to know what you though.

For me it was Willie Cauley-Stein. Can’t believe Kansas did not recruit him. Kind of like Tennessee and Cobb. We will take our lumps early but it will be so much fun to watch this team grow.

I was impressed the most by Willie Cauley-Stein! All the freshman were quite impressive and I loved the fight they all had. I doubt we will go through ths season without an injury!

I think that the reserves will carry ths team until the freshman have had a chance to develop. Mays, Polston, And Hood were all very impressive and should have a great season. We have more depth on ths team than any of Cals previous teams at KY.

You can see the great potential of Goodwin, Polythress and Noel! Harrow, Wiltjer and Noel have the most need for immediate improvement. These early games against Maryland and Duke will show just how good this team can be. It will truly take a total team effort to win either game.

I can’t wait for the season to begin! It should be quite the adventure.

If I had never seen either player before I would have thought that Stein was Noel( know Noel was injured but that does not take away from how well Stien played). His ability was amazing for a guy that noone really recruited. He was in Kansas not Iceland. He seems way to skilled to have not been a top 10 recruit. That turn and bank shot from the left elbow has made Tim Duncan a whole lot of money! !

I think Mays will push for a lot of minutes. He was slick, smooth and smart. He was quick without hurry and that is a skill I have yet to see a freshman have. He will be BIG for us especially early. He played like a guy who has been there before! !

Polson was also my third. He has really matured. you could see it in his shot selection, patience and ENERGY.

The problem I see is Cal seems to be a 7-8 man rotation guy. That may limit minutes. But he has always said he will find minutes for a player if they consistantly show they deserve them. I REALLY LIKE THIS TEAM. When Cal figures out how to use them and they learn to play together they wil be TOUGH.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GO BLUE OR STAY HOME

Willie Cauley-Stein was an absolute revelation–I thought Cal might be engaging in coach-speak, but he was great. Now I know why Cal is picking Coach Hall’s brain as to how to effectively play two big men together. I loved Archie’s energy–shades of MKG. I was impressed with Jarrod Polson’s intensity and his running of the team–I suspect he might pick up some minutes this year. I was also impressed with Julius Mays’ steadiness and shot-making ability. I was very happy to see Jon Hood have a steady, good game. And now I understand Willie’s comments that Alex is a beast–some of his dunks were just scary. I think there was flashes of great plays by all the players, but I’m with lunchbox, it’s hard to tell with a scrimmage just how good they are. I know, my opinion is kind of a cop-out, but I thought all the players were impressive at times, but all of the young guys showed their youth at times.

I liked what I saw from Hood. I also liked what I saw from Mays.

Noel will be fine as he grows into the college game, and Willie is mature beyond his years.

I think that Harrow was a little disappointing given the hype over the last 12 months.

Archie is what I had hoped he would be.

If I start my 5 it would be Willie, Nerlens, Kyle, Julius, and Archie, with Harrow, Hood, Poythress off the bench.

I liked Mays because of his shooting, maturity, ball handling and passing. He will be a steadying influence like Miller last year. I liked Polson because he was the best on the floor at distributing the ball to the correct player at the correct time and hit open shots when he got them. I was disappointed in Poythress because he has so much ability but doesn’t play hard all the time. I thought Harrow and Goodwin were a little bit too selfish to play on a Cal team. He will have to work that out of them. Wiltjer will make a lot of money if he learns how to play better position defense. I think Cal may have to play some zone early to cover up some of the young guys lack of on ball defense.

I am not as impressed wiith Stein as some of you seem to be. Noel is a much better player. Stien hasn’t learned to play help defense. Noel is already in hyper drive, when it comes to protecting the paint. I will take defense any day of the week over offense. Noel’s offense will come around.

Defense is a mind set and some players just don’t like to put forth the effort. Wiltjer is another example of a talented guy that better step his D game up. His scoring is needed, but he has to improve on defense.

Archie and Poythress are impressive players. PG play concerns me , this season.

  • Charles Babb says:

Jon Hood because no one really expected any thing like that out of him, I didn’t. I watched Jon a few times in high school and his 1st yr at UK and I never was real impressed with his play before
