Reader Sam Kegley recently sent me a question that I really don’t have an answer for and thought maybe you could help.
Kegley asked what the 2011-12 national championship team would be “officially known” as? He had seen 8th Wonders and The Undeniables. I’ve seen One and Doneables, Clutch Cats, Cal’s Pals, Unstoppables and even this clever one, Brow Beaters.
Kegley noted that even Kentucky’s Wikipedia entry has changed a few times with different nicknames for this sensational team.
So is there a consensus among fans for the team nickname? Is there one you like — or really dislike? What are your favorites?
Again, on a summer day in June as we await the draft, take a few minutes to think back on the championship season and relive the memories as you think about the nicknames.
So is the ’11-’12 team officially known as the 8th Wonders or The Undeniables or something else? Will one name become dominant? Kentucky’s Wikipedia entry has changed a few times since the title. I think I remember reading an article about all of the possible names for this team. If I’m not mistaken, the ’96 team was termed The Untouchables by Pitino–at least that’s what I remember. Anyone able to offer some clarification on this?

No nickname needed. Nicknames are born naturally, not forced.
But, if we have to choose, go for Devastation, Inc.
The Swat Team or Sir Swat-A-Lot and the Unshakables or GR8 Swat.
THE MAGNIFICENT 7
Magnificent 7 is good. Unablocker plus 6! LOL no, that is terrible. I still like Band of Brothers even though it was meant for something else.
THE MAGNIFICENT 7 IS PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I like the Won and Done’s.
Love these nicknames. Won and Dones is nice. Love Magnificent Seven, but might be telling my age
UKFMLYi think you have won the blue ribbon Magnificent 7 is great and you have to admit they were Magnificent
How about Young Guns
With all due respect, leaving out the whole team and naming the TEAM, “The Magnificent 7″ is a slap in the face to the rest of the team. They are just as important as the rest. Albeit, not as athletic or popular. Just my honest opinion. Especially since this is a team sport and the coach is always preaching “team” and “family”.
EDIT:
Leaving out the rest of the team, is what I meant.
I almost avoided the name for that resason. It is a total team sport and those other guys are just as important. There was no disrespect intended it’s just a name.
Doesn’t UK have the Fiddlin Five. Were there only five players on that team?
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GO BLUE OR STAY HOME
We know there was a Fiddlin’ Five, but I wasn’t born yet to give my opinion on that.
no the starting 5 really knew how to play the fiddle
LOL
They fiddled around too much instead of playing to win I believe.
They would let teams hang around then win late in the game.
UK has the Fab 5 too (long before it was stolen). The Magnificent 7 is great especially for those that remember when that movie was a huge hit especially among those of us who were young at the time. But that was quite a while ago. I think a whole lot of people will look at that name and not get the reference.
Teah King I let my age show on that one LOL
Hey I remember it well from when it first came out. I think a lot of us here remember it.
I would like to call them the ” THE PROFESSIONALS” but some people might take that out of context lol lol They went about their business in a professional manner even thought they were so young.
As I stated early, I like Band of Brothers, that includes every on of them. It doesn’t matter what you call them as long as you call them Champs!
Very true Linda.
I like the Gr8 Ones.
That I like.
How about Cal and the Fan-tastics. They were FAN-tastic with those of us who camped out for BBM(see pic of wife with AD on this site). They were fan-tastic in the way they played defense first. They were Fan-tastic at blocking shots and controlling the boards. They were Fan-tastic in their attitudes both on and off the court. They were Fan-tastic in the class room(3.2 GPA final semester). They were Fan-tastic beating the dirty birds twice(especially went it counted most. So for the first time since that guy’s Bombino’s I say include the coach because he did a Fan-tastic job getting them to buy in and play for each other and win a CHAMPIONSHIP.
CAL AND THE FAN-TASTICS
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GO BLUE OR STAY HOME!!!!!!!!!
