Franklin County standout Ryan Timmons still is not ready to make his college choice and recently has added scholarship offers from California and Missouri to those he already had and Florida — thanks to receivers coach Joker Phillips — continues to make a push for him.
The versatile Timmons is one of the state’s top players. He had 72 rushes for 1,260 yards and 25 scores for 12-1 Franklin last season and caught 29 passes for 970 yards and 17 more scores. He had 45 total touchdowns and scored 260 points.
Franklin coach Chris Tracy says Timmons, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds at a Kentucky camp, will make his college choice known either Feb. 6 (the first day of the national signing period) or Feb. 7 during a ceremony at the high school.
Tracy says new Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown has “been to see him three or four times” already, including Tuesday night.
“I think he is a priority for Kentucky and this new staff,” Tracy said. “Florida has really jumped back into the picture. They have not offered a scholarship yet, but they are really close. The one thing Florida likes is that he can do it all. They don’t have that type of guy now who can play the slot, play running back, play receiver and just do it all. All through middle school, he was a tailback.”
The coach says Timmons has a “great relationship” with Illinois coaches and that they “have been there from day one” with him.
Kentucky did not seem positioned that strongly with Timmons until the staff changed. However, Tracy says Timmons always liked head coach Joker Phillips and recruiting coordinator Chuck Smith.
“I think his big issue with them had more to do with winning than anything else,” Tracy said. “He really, really likes Joker a lot. He had a great relationship with coach Smith. But it had more to do with winning.
“Being so close to home also plays a role in this. Expectations are different when you stay home to play. That’s something he has to juggle in his mind. Do I want to be that close to home and be the crown jewel as the home state guy? I know he really likes coach Brown a lot. He came in with guns blazing to try and pick him up.
“He will go there and probably know more about the offense than most kids who go through spring practice. That’s our offense. This is my seventh or eighth year running this offense and one of the first clinics I went to about this offense there was a young Neal Brown of Troy University there as a speaker. So Ryan knows plenty about the offense.”
Tracy also always knew plenty about Timmons. Tracy was head coach at Woodford County when Timmons was a freshman and Timmons led Franklin to a win over Woodford.
“They ran the option and he was one of the wingbacks. I remember the quarterback tossing him the ball at the 1 (yard line) and he took it 99 yards in a game against Lafayette,” Tracy said. “That did not have a bearing on me taking the job at Franklin the next year, but there were people there telling me he could be awesome. You could tell he had that special it factor about him.”
He apparently still has it.
“Several college coaches have been telling he has the ability to play in the NFL from what they have seen on film. They say he could put on 10 to 15 pounds and play in the NFL right now,” Tracy said. “I’m so close to him, I don’t see that. But there are coaches telling me that.”
Tracy said at Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights (camp) last summer that Timmons outran everyone he was paired against, including skilled players who have verbally committed to the Buckeyes. “We are not talking by a step or head, but by a yard or more,” Tracy said.
The coach says his star runs “good routes” that make him seem even faster and that Franklin offensive coordinator Eddie James, who has coached Timmons since middle school, designed schemes to take advantage of his versatility. “You just didn’t know where he would be and I would think it would be the same in college for him,” Tracy said.
Tracy isn’t sure exactly what criteria Timmons will use to make his college choice.
“It is a decision him and family will have to make. I try to lay information out to him and let him decide what to do,” Tracy said. “Our defensive coordinator wrote out some questions for him and had him answer about each school and for him to write the pros and cons of each school so he could compare them.
“One thing we have talked about is him making up his mind before Feb. 1 and then telling the program he has committed. But we’ll keep his decision quiet until he can make his announcement to everyone at the same time.”

Sure hope Neal is telling him to “come be a hero”! We need you big guy! Stay here and be a hero!
Yep he can be the hometown hero in a high powered offense that showcases his skills, be a person that a state will always remember or another number that just passes thru at a different college like Florida or Illinois.
If he has to think about this decision then he needs to go elsewhere.
Eric, for some not all this is their 1st big decision in life. He should think about it very closely. Yes I would love for him to be here with us, but he has to look out what is best for himself sports wise, academic wise and of course living from home. Big factors for an 18 yr old. Big leap for me when I joined the army. They have all leaps of faith they take, they just have to ensure they land right.
Good response – I agree –
It is a huge decision & all recruits need to give it a lot of thought.
Here is hoping that Ryan picks the BLUE and WHITE of Kentucky.
You can not blame these kids, Joker and staff should have been beating down the doors like Stoops and Neal Brown are doing now. Trinity and many more Jefferson County schools field great ball players that Kentucky needs to coax into attending them and to play in the SEC.
I have stated before that Joker and crew had conceded that they could not land 4 and 5 star talent and I think they were lazy when it came to recruiting.
Great athlete. It would be great to have him apart of UK’s offense. I sure hope he picks UK, we need him.
My sources tell me that Timmons will pick Florida. His mom wore a Florida shirt to work recently for what that’s worth.
24 7 they haven’t offered yet. Hard to commit w/o an offer. Not saying Joker and Muschamp won’t but what a shame that Joker couldn’t recruit players like this when he was here at UK but waits till he gets to FL what a joke. Hope Timmons keeps that in mind.
I can understand why a kid could be interested in a school that has not offerred if it is EARLY in the recruitment process. However with only a few days left until an expected early Feb. decision, I CAN NOT understand why those schools would still be on his list if they have not offerred.
ARE THEY REALLY INTERESTED IF THEY HAVE NOT OFFERRED?
I agree with Ira – Don’t count U.K. out with Brown & Stoops on the hunt.
This kid will fit perfectly into Brown’s system & he & his family understand that.
He also liked Ohio State, but like Florida they did not offer. Not sure if Gators will offer or not
I’m not normally wrong when I am this impressed with a player Larry, yet FLorida has not offered nor Ohio State. Either they just don’t need athletes or I’m missing something. Any insight Larry?
Eric….what a stupid statement. Remind me to ask u to take a seat beside me on the Titanic.
UK in the past have lost to many good athletes in football to other programs. I hope Stoops and company change that real soon. Timmons would be a great catch. BBN would love it.
If you guys want to see the next Randall Cobb, let this kid get in the right situation. He is probably even better physically and every bit as elusive. In case you didn’t take the time to do the math, he played in 13 games and scored 45 touchdowns, averaged 17.5 yards per rush, and nearly 33.5 yards per reception. Yes it was high school but it was against overall good competition and after watching him play, all I can say is tackling him is sort of like trying to squeeze a bar of soap in the tub. If James Quick had not played at a much higher profile program, Timmons would likely have been Mr. Football instead.
In the Air Raid system, I would think Timmons will have a greater chance to shine. He won’t be the only kid out there with 4.4 speed running routes, either. UF hasn’t offered him a scholly yet? Not saying it will happen, but kids that are 4th and 5th option for teams, may get their offer pulled if they have a chance to get a higher rated kid at the last minute.
Wish the young man all the best, but would prefer to see him with Kentucky on his chest in the fall.
I can sympathize with the decision Timmons has. He apparently a gifted athlete. This decision is not only about being a hero but the opportunity to play at the next level. He has to evaluate which program is going to give him the best opportunity and exposure to get a ticket to the NFL dance. At the ripe old age of 18 or so a young man does not have much life experience to draw upon to make an informed decision. Make a bad decison and he loses the opportunity, for all practical purposes, forever.
While I would very much like to see him choose to stay in state, playing for the Cats while in a building mode may not get him to where he wants to be. The obvious emotional decision is to sign with KY but the rational decision may be something else altogether. For example, the kid from Danville last year that signed for USC (or USLA – wherever), has anyone heard much from him since? It’s not an easy decision. Cut the kid some slack.
Neal Brown knows how to put points on the board and he doesn’t need a QB to be in his system for three solid seasons, before he can get production. If I were Timmons, there is no way I would come to UK, if Joker and Sanders were running the program. The page has turned and this is not the cap gun offense of the Joker era. I understand where RJ is coming from, but this is not the run, dropped pass, third and 9, and punt offense that Joker ran last season.
If Timmons wants to get a feel for what he can expect at Kentucky, he just needs to imagine Texas Tech’s offense and Florida States defense in UK uniforms.
By he way, Florida had trouble scoring, last season. I like UK’s OC over UF’s OC. Look at the stats. If UF had Texas Tech’s O, this past season, they may have been the ones playing for the title.
True tough decision for Timmons if Florida offers. Joker will probably promise mama that he will take care of him in a strange place however the question may very well be will Joker be there for four years! He may get another head job at a school in Florida or will Muschamp last? If he joins the BBN the coaches are just beginning an exciting time and more than likely will be there for his college career. Timmons I hope knows that he will be ONE of the stars that will be playing for the blue and white and will not feel all the pressure to be the ONE star. Just come have alot of fun–its truly a new era in Kentucky football!!
If UF keeps playing like they did against uL, Muschamp will be gone.
