Kentucky senior Eloy Vargas was happy his mother got to watch him play for the first time in the United States. He got in only two minutes in the first half of Friday’s win, but he was thrilled she got to see him even play.
“Yes, she was here and that was very nice,†Vargas said. “We had this planned. She did not get to come for Senior Night, so now she had a chance to come.â€
His mother lives in the Dominican Republic and had not seen him since he was home in the summer trying out for a spot on the national team coached by Calipari. She will be in the U.S. staying in Florida until he graduates in May.
“I appreciate coach Cal letting me play with her here,†Vargas said. “That’s the first time for her to see me play here. I knew where she was. I knew where the families were sitting and this time I had her there. That was really nice.â€

Great news that Eloy’s mother finally was able to see him play basketball. I am so grateful that I was fortunate enough to attend my children’s games while they were growing up. If one had been on a team a world away and I had not been able to see them play would have been the hardest thing for me to do.
I can only imagine the pride his mother felt when Eloy was on the floor. I am sure she enjoyed every second of it. I hope she will be able to attend the rest of the games.
Have a great time being with your son. You did a good job, he is a fine young man.
