UK commit C.J. Conrad continues to be impressive

By LARRY VAUGHT

The more we see from Ohio tight end C.J. Conrad, the more obvious it is was a premier recruit he was for Kentucky when he gave the Wildcats an early verbal commitment in the 2015 class.

Conrad is the only UK commit participating int he prestigious The Opening — a camp for the nation’s top recruits. Plenty of other players at the national event that started Saturday have UK offers, but he’s the only UK commit.

Conrad, a four-start prospect, won the MVP for tight ends and receivers earlier at the Columbus Nike Training Camp. Conrad had 16 other offers when he picked UK and could up his rating to a five-star with a strong performance at this event.

Kentucky has a  need for a big-time playmaker at tight end. UK hopes incoming freshman Darryl Long can be one. But they also believe that Conrad is going to be one that can stretch the field and make plays similar to what Jacob Tamme did.

    C. J. is an exciting player, and the type of TE a great offense needs. These indeed are exciting days in UK football recruiting that speaks volumes to the commitment Coach has placed on turning this program around. Recruits like this were rare, generally speaking, in the past at Kentucky. Players like C. J. are now becoming the norm. It is a tribute to Coach Stoops and his staff for going after quality football players that can take UK to glory. Thanks C. J. for picking the Kentucky Wildcats. I look forward to seeing you play.

I also applaud Coach Stoops and company for targeting the premier players in our region. The draw of competing in the SEC should be very enticing. However, it remains to be seen if we can hold on to players that increase their level before signing day, or if the likes of Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan etc. will steal them. Work hard coaches, recruits, and local press and we can convince these types of recruits that this offense, coaching staff and conference is the place to showcase themselves for the NFL.

These are very exciting times for the present and the future of UK football. The coach and the staff continue to show that they can recruit “lights out” with anybody. The big outstanding question is can they coach this team to a higher level of performance than we have seen for the last few years, and I continue to be hopeful that they can. I agree with the coach that it is prudent to not put a number on the number of victories for success, but I think I can be satisfied if they get a minimum of 4 wins this year, stay competitive, and avoid any serious “blowout” losses.

The depth and talent pool this staff is building up is showing how scarce we were the past 4 seasons . Fortunately, stoops is bringing some home run winners and this will be a process.
Drew Barker, Timmons, Hatcher, Hortol, Boom Williams, Baker, Elam etc is just the start of building up a first full class and cleaning out the roster in other aspects.

Coach Brown and Stoops know they need to get the ball rolling and I do have faith in them.
