LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Elston Turner scored 40 points for Texas A&M, and the Aggies topped Kentucky on the road Saturday 83-71.
It was the first home conference loss in John Calipari’s tenure as Kentucky’s coach. Kentucky had won 24 straight home SEC games before Saturday.
Texas A&M (12-3, 2-0) held an advantage as large as nine early in the second half.
With the game tied at 63 with 4:04 to play, Aggies guard Fabyon Harris hit a jumper to help send them on a string of 11 unanswered points to end Kentucky’s push. Turner, a 6-foot-5 senior whose previous career high was 26 points, had 25 at halftime for the Aggies. He was 10 of 13 from the field in the first half, including 7 of 7 from inside the 3-point line.
Nerlens Noel finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks, six assists and four steals for the Wildcats (10-5, 1-1).

Turner was as good as I’ve seen in awhile. UK looked rattled.
He was on fire, that was crazy. Though watching on WatchESPN mad it rough for me with a good portion of the game being streamed in really low quality. That not withstanding it was just one of those games, and Kentucky could not seem to buy a basket in the last 10 minutes.
I probably don’t know what I’m talking about but right now I don’t think any of UK’s freshmen stars are ready for the NBA.
Larry P. I disagree with you Nerlens Noel looked real good out there.
I think Nerlens MAYBE but none of the rest. I’m mystified at how all these high-profile recruits look so disheveled out there. These guys are used to playing on all-star teams, etc. so it shouldn’t be that hard for them to build chemistry or leadership. There are way too many mental lapses and physical weaknesses for this point in the season.
I agree with you Ira, Nerlens was the one bright spot. For a UK team with the length they have to get beat on the boards is pretty tired.
Nerlens, as in EVERY game this season, was the only one giving maximum effort on EVERY play. The team played hard, but Nerlens always plays on another level.
If all of his teammates would join him, with the same effort and intensity, this team would probably be something special.
Most everyone is in agreement that Poythress may not show more than he has to date. He just does not have the “want to”. My biggest disappointment is in Wiltjer….he just does not seem to have the skill level or I.Q. that we were led to believe he had and that he showed more last year than this year. He seems to be more interested in being the campus comedian. Second disappointment is Mays….he has got to be shooting no more than 25% since he has been here and was recruited for his shooting and leadership.
I’m going the other way Mike. We knew what Kyle was, so the disappointment isn’t really there in regards to him. He is what he is. However, Alex was supposed to be something really special and he has been as lackluster and lackadaisical as can be. HE is the biggest disappointment to me. I like the kid, but his head just doesn’t seem to be anywhere near the court during 90% of the game.
In some ways I thought they looked better in a loss than they did against Vandy in a win. More effort. Turner couldn’t miss but I think all his shots were pretty much wide open even if they were pretty far out.
I agree. There wasn’t a lack of effort, I truly thought they were playing hard but execution was atrocious. This UK team stood around at the 3 point line and made very little effort to move around and attack.
I just don’t understand this team, but I don’t think Cal does either.
That Turner was very impressive tonight. I was pleased when the fans gave him applause when he left the game at the end. Respecting a great player. I think UK didn’t lose as much as it was that A&M won the game, if that distinction makes sense. UK gave effort most of the time, but as Doug said, the execution was bad. A&M brought their A game for sure.
Sorry, Jim said the execution was bad, not Doug.
I stood and was applauding just as loudly for Turner coming off the court as I would for one of our own. He deserved it.
and you should have been standing JIm Boyers. turner was great
Hats off to Turner…aside from a loss, my disappointment is with the Rupp Arena Wildcat Fans (don’t kill the messenger)… At 51 to 51, Texas AM comes down on offense, ” Our Fans Were Asleep “… Tied 53 to 53, Texas AM comes down on offense, Again, No Chant of,” DEFENSE, DEFENSE ” or ” Go Big Blue, GO BIG BLUE “, please anything…Rupp Arena has gotten SPOILED, that never, ever happened when I was in Rupp (over 60 games), Never ! And worst than that, was that 90% of the Wildcat Fans, KNEW that was the most ” Pivotal Moment ” of the Game…..Our Young Wildcats Needed your energy and chaos to help disrupt any ” New Momentum ” Our opponent was attempting to Rally, ” And They Did “. Many of you want to question the Will and/or Pride of this Young Team, maybe we can start with Ourselves. I Love this TEAM…But, I would like to see that Old School ” Hook Shot ” of Wiltjer’s put on display, personally, I would force Wiltjer to stay in the Post, forget about his three for now, We need to teach him to fight for his space and place down low.
It WAS pretty loud in the arena Larry, but there was a point (maybe when you are talking about) when I was standing and everyone around me sat down. I looked around and told my brother that it was stupid for everyone to sit down at that point. It was a time when everyone should have remained on their feet.
I didn’t sit.
Larry T, I don’t think Wiltjer wants to fight for his position. I’m starting to believe he is fine coming off the bench shooting a few threes and being taken out of the game. No pressure on him, keeps it on the freshmen and off of himself. I said it before he only looks good against lower level talent schools.
And that’s exactly why I would force him to play down low….
Thank heavens for Vaught’s Views. There is so much hate on FB right now it is depressing. I’m scratching my head about this team and I think the problem is they are not a team yet. They don’t have each others back. Noel tried his best but one person cannot do it all. No matter what, not matter WHAT, this is still my team and I will not bad mouth one of these YOUNG men who do not have an experienced leader.
I don’t know what it will take to light a fire under them, but something is going to click sooner then later. We had four guys in double digits but what happened? Does anyone really know? We can sit here and dissect and discuss this game until the cows come home and it won’t do any good. Move on and pray it gets better, much better.
People are hating on Cal, on Wiltjer, on Cauley-Stein but really, is that going to do any good?
Cal is scratching his head, I am scratching my head but I have faith in Cal.
Livin’ Blue & Lovin’ It!
Great stuff Linda S. Team will be what it is when all is said and done
I’ve seen that type of shooting display only handful of times where everything you shoot goes in. Jodie Meeks at Tennessee, Chris Jackson for LSU in Rupp, Pistol Pete and Austin Carr did it multiple times v. Cats when I was younger but we always had Issel, Pratt and company to offset.
