He’s one of Kentucky’s big-name recruits in the 2016 freshman class, but Woodford County offensive lineman Drake Jackson says he does not know what to expect this season.

“I don’t think anybody knows. Coaches just tell you to do your best and that is my expectation after this spring and summer. Let the coaches decide the future,” Jackson said.

He says offensive line coach John Schlarman has been “great” to play for.

“His good days and bad days are not much different. Every day for him is consistent and that’s the great thing about him. He has been great. He really knows what he is doing,” Jackson said.

Kentucky football players report for preseason camp next week and two players that certainly will get a lot of attention will be in-state offensive linemen Drake Jackson and Landon Young, both true freshmen.

Both were five-star players and Army All-Americans who never wavered in their commitment to Kentucky.

“If we are depending on a freshman to come in and help us win this year, then we are not doing very good at what we did before,” said offensive coordinator Eddie Gran. “If you get freshmen that come in and play, it has to mean you did a phenomenal job in recruiting for them to be playing.

Drake Jackson knew the transition to center would not be easy. That’s one reason he graduated early from Woodford County High School so he could enroll at UK in January and go through spring practice.

The four-star recruit is running with the third-team offensive line at center.

“I am just playing center right now. Hopefully I will get to the point where I can work some at guard, too,” said Jackson. “They’re just working me right now getting me good at one thing before I move on.”
