Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops says the $110 million allocated for football facility upgrades at Commonwealth Stadium will have a “great impact on our program.” Stoops says the plans “shows the commitment” to football that Kentucky has.
“It’s an exciting time for all of the Big Blue Nation. Exciting for fans, students, for our players. It shows the commitment we have to the football program and our fans,” said Stoops before Saturday’s UK-Texas A&M basketball game. “We are serious about football. The administration is serious about football. It took a tremendous commitment from a lot of pepole to make this happen.”
The timing could not have been better for Stoops since he had a key group of recruits visiting this weekend and attending Saturday’s game. He got to take them into the newly renovated facilities at Rupp Arena to give them a taste of what is to come at Commonwealth Stadium.
“It shows that this is first class,” Stoop said. “It’s great exposure for our players and recruits.”
He says he’s had a “great response” from recruits. Kyle Meadows, a 6-5, 280-pound offensive tackle from Ohio who had offers from Florida State, Michigan State and West Virginia, gave his verbal commitment to the Wildcats Saturday. Rivals.com ranks among the best 50 tackles in the nation. Another Ohio player, lineman Lovell Peterson, said Friday he had also committed to UK.
“I think it’s very important for us to get into Ohio, obviously Southern Ohio being very, very close. We consider that local. Again, with my ties to Northeastern Ohio and really all through Ohio it’s going to be very important to us,” Stoops said. “There’s tremendous football being played in Ohio. We want to treat that as home base. We’re going to work Ohio hard, along with Kentucky and really anything within close proximity to UK.”
The facility improvements could help more recruits decide to commit to Stoops and his staff. When he was hired in December, Stoops said he trusted UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart when he told him facility upgrades were planned.
“Mitch and I did touch on that the first time we spoke. Again, I felt very comfortable with Mitch and I felt his commitment to the program. We did talk about that,” Stoops said. “It wasn’t the primary reason why I came here. I told you all that in the initial press conference, about my belief in this program, getting things done. This certainly helps. Everything Mitch and I talked about is coming true here.”
“I just think anything you do, it’s for the players. Much is placed on the emphasis on recruiting. That’s what helps you, is the players being comfortable and the players having a great facility. As you know, in all of our sports our athletes are here and with us a great deal of time and spend a lot of time in our complex. I think it’s the most important for our players to feel comfortable, to have them in a comfortable environment, with their locker room and just a facility where they can spend some time and feel good.”

No doubt it will help, coach Stoop’s is the man, what he and his staff have done on short notice is nothing short of amazing… When it’s all said and done this will be the best recruiting class we have ever seen at KY, remind you coming after a 2-10 season…lol
Great job coach and thanks Larry…
Great article! Can’t wait to tell all those UofL fans at Church this morning to enjoy it while they can because UK is coming!
Larry Pup, just take it easy. 2013 is still going to be very challenging
I agree. We will have predominately a team made of of 1st and second year players. When you consider Max Smith is an old man compared to most of the guys starting next year, the challenges are enormous. Still, I think these guys can show some grit and spark and set the stage for long term success. We have the human resources to build on. Now we have to execute the plan. It won’t be easy and certainly not very pretty at times but if the trend is up, I’m on board. Besides, I’ve already committed for season tickets next year and I plan to use every one of them. Go Cats!
I really think the majority of fans realize 2013 will be challenging. The schedule is an absolute beast and we have more than a few “problem” areas. Progress in being competitive with our defensive schemes and adjustments during the game on both sides of the ball are really what I am hoping to see.
I think the fans know we have a challenging schedule ahead. We are not expecting an undefeated season. What we are excited about, is the new offensive scheme, a play book that won’t rival NYC’s phone book, a new defense that won’t have our players confused on the field, a short recruiting season by Mark Stoops and staff that is completely blowing out of the water anything Joker ever tried to put together.
Also the fan base expect this team to be competitive in all of our games this up coming season instead of taking some of the butt whippings we had to endure. I expect at a minimum for us to go 6-6, and prefer we hit 7-5 this up coming season and if this team wins more all the better, but I do have realistic expectations for the next 2 years.
Add in the renovations that are 10yrs over due it is exciting times in the Bluegrass!
The Fan’s, (including myself) expectations are far beyond what I could have hoped for…I believe, we are all willing to give this Program, the Time and Support to succeed…
I think everyone realizes how difficult the schedule is, but what I want to see is competiveness on both sides of the ball. So many games this past season, we just weren’t competitive. The improvement will come two or three recruiting classes down the road. The most encouraging aspect is that Stoops and his staff aren’t settling for everyones leftovers.
