  • UK v WKU FB:
    in 3 months, 4 days, 20 hours, 42 minutes

Senior defensive end Collins Ukwu, one of the team captains, said the incident so close to game time last week that resulted in three players — running back Raymond Sanders, receiver Bookie Cobbins and cornerback Marcus Caffey being cited for marijuana possession — being suspended did not impact the outcome of Saturday’s game with Western Kentucky that UK lost in overtime.

“The thing is, you just have to keep playing. I am sure every team in the nation has the same type of issues or what not,” Collins said. “It doesn’t bother us. We could definitely have needed them, but that’s something you don’t look at. Things are going to happen throughout a team and it was just a case of playing on.”

Starting offensive tackle Kevin Mitchell took the company line, too, on Monday.

“It always hurts our team (when players are suspended). I am not sure what happened. We didn’t really know anything about it until after the game,” Mitchell said. “We just have to move on. We could use the players, but you have to move on and play.”

True, but fans are going to have a hard time moving on. First, UK coach Joker Phillips said after the game that UK “matched” Western, not exactly what one expects from a Southeastern Conference coach playing a Sun Belt team. Second, Phillips has players cited for marijuana possession but has quickly reinstated them. Third, Ukwu said every team has “issues” as a way to look past what happened.

Phillips was asked if perhaps two chances for Caffey were not enough and if he would get another one.

“We are in the business of making sure the kids have an opportunity to succeed, definitely.  We’re not a rehab center, a center that we’re going to continue to give guys chances,” Phillips said. “We love Marcus. This is all we got, okay? This is all we got. We’ll go with him until we feel like we can’t take it anymore. We’ve done it with other kids. But this is all he has, and we’ll continue to stick by him and help him get through all these things.”

Admirable. Probably even the right thing to do. But he’s not playing all year.

Cobbins will also now be on his third chance after his spring academic woes, but he’s played little and likely will play even less now with freshmen Demarcus Sweat and A.J. Legree emerging more daily.

Sanders, who has never been in any type of trouble at UK, will play Saturday at Florida. Count on that. He’s too good to stand and watch if he’s available. And we don’t know what the outcome of his case will be Oct. 9.

I asked Phillips if this was standard punishment and how he determined where Sanders would go back on the depth chart. He either misunderstood the standard punishment part or chose just to answer the depth chart question.

“We don’t have a standard. The thing we have to look at is how well a guy (George) performed that came in and replaced him, how well did the guy perform, take care of business, does what he’s supposed to do, never hear his name on any lists, goes to class. Jonathan George performed well enough to be the starter,” Phillips said.

George did as he ran for 51 yards and two scores and caught six passes for 54 yards and one touchdown. But the negativity of the Western loss only increases with the explanation about the players’ suspension.

“We have to tell ourselves to keep fighting. We have to practice hard because the better you practice, the better the games will be. We have to tell ourselves to stay positive, especially the older guys,” junior linebacker Avery Williamson said. “Some of the younger guys are kind of down, but we have to hold them up. The juniors, seniors and even sophomores have to help the freshmen out.”

What about the coaches? Do the players feel they need to help Phillips and his staff keep their jobs after a 1-2 start and consecutive losing seasons?

“We really try not to talk about it much. We just try to push that to the side and just go out and play. You can’t really worry about situations with coaches. That is not our issue to really worry about,” Williamson said. “That’s not in our hands. Well, it is in our hands. We have to win. That’s not our situation really to talk about. We have to do it for ourselves, for our teammates and play for each other.”

That last line is accurate, too, because after losing to Western and learning why players were suspended, the UK bandwagon is practically empty except for players and coaches that have to convince themselves they can overcome this horrendous weekend.

I expect that pot use on university athletic teams reflect the percentate of college kids who smoke dope. Coaches must decide to take a hard line or shrug their shoulders and say that kids do the darndest things. Playing kids who have broken the law may or may not contribute to displine problems. Once UK established a no tolerance policy after a football player was killed in a DUI accident. That did not last long. Since then we have had two basketball coaches with alcoholic problems and currently have a basketball “special assistant” with a record of DUIs including one in Lexington. If we can tolerate that then maybe a little pot is not so bad.

  • Lexington Joe says:

If it didn’t impact the game against WKU, then obviously it won’t impact the team by doing the right thing and booting them and sending them home.

So our unwritten football policy now is possession and being caught smoking pot is a one game suspension to any future player.

Maybe UK coaches don’t have a standard, but UK fans do and this is not acceptable.

Larry can you ask Calapari how he would handle this issue?

    • Kokoma Joe says:

Re: how would Calipari have handled this issue?

First one has to decide if alcohol and pot are equal problems. Pot is illegal and alcohol is not. But both are mind bending agents. Personally I would hope that coaches would fight both pot and alcohol and have a clear cut policy which details what punishment violations of said policy would be. Joker is quoted as indicating that he handles each incident according to the circumstances. In other words, he has no policy. Calipari brought an assistant to Lexington from Memphis with DUIs and that man has had an incident in Lexington. His job title was changed but he sits on the bench for each game. How could Calipari expect more of his kids than he does of his assistants? The truth is that we don’t know what goes on in any college sports program except what happens to be brought to light by the police.

“Everything is relative”….. It’s funny how the human brain can rationalize just about anything.

    • Kokomo Joe says:

Yes, we can rationalize just about anything. Joe Hall is one of my favorit UK coaches. Yet, Dirk Minnifield claims to have started smoking pot at 14. He says that he used cocaine and pot during his college career. He also claims that he and other players smoked dope before games and that he played with pot in his system. So, did Coach Hall know? If he did not, should he have known? If he knew did he cover it up? I like Hall, but knowing that drug abuse was common under his watch is troubling.

  • RJ says:

BTW, it didn’t take long for this story to become viral. The Charlotte Observe gave this story 4 column inches in this morning’s Sports page. Parents and potential recruits read this stuff and make decisions based on what they can see in black and white. And, it really bothers me that Joker “has no standards” for behavior. As a parent, that would give me great pause…………

  • PHILLIP BARKER says:

I don’t think you’ll find much in the way of “commitment” to anything from pot smokers…Joker’s answers to this problem really turned me off!

  • johnl says:

Funny,Phillips heavily disciplined Mike Hartline a 21 year old adult for intoxication, but taking a different stance this time around with these younger (?) players.
With the way this team is performing, especially on defense, one would suspect that several team members are involved in various forms of substance abuse.

    • Kokoma Joe says:

As I remember it, Joker suspended Hartline but allowed him to be on the field for the bowl game. Hartline was accused of more that being drunk. He was also accused of assult, although I don’t believe that he was charged with that crime. If the incident happened during the season would Joker have suspended him for more than one game? Who knows? What it comes down to is this. Does this or any college coach and that school’s fan base hold athletes to a higher standard than the typical college student? If the coach does, he should have a stated policy and always abide with it. If he does not, then he should just expect his players to show up sober on game days. I expect that more and more coaches are taking the second choice.

      • larryvaught says:

Kokoma, I tried to ask Joker if they had specific penalties for specific offenses, but did not get an answer as he apparently misunderstood the question. Understand your concerns

  • Georgia Blue says:

Larry the truth will come out when they go to court. From my understanding on what happen and the citation that was written . Raymond Sanders didn’t have any drugs in his possession . The police didn’t find any drugs on him , he was leaving the apartment when the cop order him back in the apartment upon walking out the door. He is sorry for what happen . He sorry for letting his Coaches , Teammates , Fans and Family down . He know he made a bad decision and was held accountable for letting the devil use him. He knows he has to walk a straight line from here on out, but to let everybody know that he didn’t have any drugs in his possession . Like I said the truth will come out on Oct 9 when he appear in court

    • larryvaught says:

Thanks Georgia Blue. That all sounds very logical to me. Raymond is such a good, good young man, just stunned me when he was cited. He’s one that worked so hard during the summer and has always done things the right way. thanks for the explanation

      • RJ says:

If what GABlue is correct then Raymond should not be punished. And if so, I bet he remembers who and what got him into this mess to begin with. “If you sleep with dogs, you’ll catch fleas”!
