Fifteen-year-old Anna Stewart Burdette is not passionate about much. She keeps her emotions in check and rarely cries about much of anything, according to her father, Pat. She keeps her composure and is reserved when it comes to outward displays of her feelings.

Football is the exception to that rule.

Anna Stewart’s was one of two names selected at the 2012 women’s football clinic as part of a drawing for an all-expenses-paid road trip to Arkansas with the Kentucky football team. She would get to travel with the team and watch a game unfold behind the scenes, instead of just in the stands.

“I had never seen her that excited about anything before,” Pat said.

That feeling of ecstasy, however, was short-lived. Anna Stewart’s mother, Ilona, received a call from UK director of football operations Nolan Jones saying that because of an NCAA rule about high school students of a “recruitable” age, Anna Stewart would not be allowed to go on the road trip with the team.

“I was at work when I got the call,” Ilona said. “And I just sat down and cried. I was crushed for her.”

“I do not show that much emotion except for with football,” Anna Stewart said. “Mom didn’t tell me until the next morning. I never cry but I cried that day because I was just so shocked. I had been looking forward to it so much.”

Although the shock of having such an experience ripped away from her was difficult to deal with, Anna Stewart bounced back, in large part due to the extra efforts made by the UK football program. Coach Joker Phillips saw Anna Stewart at Fan Day the week after the women’s clinic and asked her for a hug. But a hug wasn’t all Anna Stewart got: Phillips has made it possible for her to be on the sidelines for at least a portion of each home game at Commonwealth.

“It’s pretty awesome to get to go down on the field,” Anna Stewart said. “It’s basically my dream job to be on the sidelines. I want to go into sports medicine one day so hopefully with all this, I can somehow get a job around the program when I’m old enough.”

In Anna Stewart’s place, Ilona and Pat were allowed to go on the road trip to Arkansas. According to Pat, his phone battery was completely sapped by the end of the night of the game because Ilana was texting Anna Stewart every detail of the experience.

“The trip as a whole was great,” Pat said. “To see the inside workings of the football game… Until you see it, you don’t really comprehend it. Kentucky is a well-run organization, but it’s mostly just impressive people with a real sense of class who work there… If I had a son (who played football), UK would be the kind of place I would want to send him.”

“I can’t emphasize enough how well we were treated,” Ilona said. “And the extra efforts that were made for Anna Stewart…you can tell that Joker and the whole staff really cared and were sorry for what had happened…Anna Stewart has said before, ‘I’d rather lose with Joker than win with Spurrier.’ It’s just such a class organization.”

To finish the thought, better still will be to win with Joker, which we expect a lot of going forward if UK will stay the course. Go Cats!

    Typical NCAA reaction.
Looks like Anna Stewart & her parents still had a good experience in spite of the NCAA.

Great story. Perfect of ridiculous NCAA rules. Is Anna an Athlete or active in any sport? Because if not, this is a perfect example of the NCAA. If she is, then one way (I don’t know the applicable rules) would for UK to make this a “recruiting trip” under the guise of any sport, or specifically not hers. At any rate, I have to say that I do believe we have a class act Coach and staff. It sounds as if they have indeed tried to do the right thing.

Ashley did a great job with stories on those who won the trips from the women’s clinic and loved the way Joker handled this NCAA mess.

    Mark Emmert……. NCAA………. UK………… Hmmmm………. Does it surprise you?

Glad to see Joker and the staff take care of it.

Juan, we do, inded, have a “class act Coach and staff.” Too, I can understand Anna’s statement that she had rather lose under Joker than win under Spurrier — although I would change the statement from “under Spurrier” to “under Petrino.”

Having said that, I better like Ilona’s response, changing the statement, instead, to the following: “better still TO WIN under Joker.” I so agree. Yes, although an unpopular stance, I’m hanging on to the hope of just that, starting that with a win at Missouri this coming Saturday. Then it’s one game at a time. Yes, the extent of our injuries, paired with the early season losses to Louisville and WKU (which some fans would never forgive even if we had ended up with a winning season, by the way — note how many had immediately acted as if the season were already over, particularly Joker’s coaching career), have helped to make it impossible for this team to have a winning season. YET, the door has not yet been closed on Joker’s potentially WINNING here, so, again, I like Ilona’s response here.

Also, I’m impressed with a fifteen-year-old’s having the maturity to recognize and value “class.” Thus, it’s KUDOS to Anna and her parents. Further, I’ve repeatedly shared here what we gals, young and old alike, have seen from being around our coaching staff and the players at our women’s clinics — their class and how much they obviously care about their players, along with their fans (at least us fans at those clinics). Anna’s dad says here that he would want a hypothetical son who played football to choose a place like UK. I, likewise, have frequently said the same. Yes, I want our football Cats to win, badly so, BUT, on the other hand, winning is NOT everything. I want us to win with CLASS. It’s refreshing to hear a fifteen-year-old basically saying just that. Again, KUDOS.

Well, there’s another ridiculous NCAA rule. I’m pretty sure Anna’s not going to be a recruiting target for UK. The well isn’t that dry yet. She sounds like a mature young lady and I’m so glad UK took care of her and her family in such a classy way.

Thanks for these stories, Ashley. I was interested in the actual logistics of the team traveling and the observations of those who won the trips, but you did a wonderful job with the real stories of the people.

    • larryvaught says:

She sure did Lori. Ashley is extremely talented for a journalist so young. Going to be a great hire for someone in a few years
