Mark Stoops not surprised by passion of Kentucky football fans and counting on that support

New Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops didn’t need long to realize there was maybe even more buzz about UK football than he realized when he took the job.

“It seems like everyone I talk to is very excited about that. I had a chance to sit and visit with Tim Couch and Tim kind of said the same thing about how many people are excited, and you know it’s great to hear because we’re going to need that. We’re going to need great support,” Stoops said.

“We’re all in this together and I mean that and the media, you know, I need your support too. That’s the way it is. You all could put a spin on things any way you want and really, I think, it’s exciting to see that everyone’s excited about football. So it’s good.”

Stoops was not surprised by UK’s passionate fan base.

“This is the SEC and I know the fans of Kentucky want great football. That doesn’t surprise me one bit. I expected that and I expect great support,” Stoops said. ” I believe in the fan base here. I see their passion, so we’re all in this thing together and we’re looking forward to it, embracing it.

“It’s been a great relationship with basketball. Coach Cal (John Calipari) has been tremendous. I’ve had a few visits with him. I’ve had the opportunity to watch practice and sit in on one of his meetings and just a chance to spend a little time with him. I’m looking forward to that relationship. How can you not embrace such a dynamic person and such a great program?”

We have always had great football fans, even with losing teams. That is why the attendence dropoff this year was so alarming. The fans made a statement. They said, “We are no longer going to support this team until the administration shows that it is serious about football.” The fans disguised as empty seats served as a wake-up call, and look what we wound up with. I have never seen apathy turn into excitement any quicker than the hire of Mark Stoops and his staff. I can’t help but believe that we have greater days ahead of us.

Someone needs to tip Coach Stoops off on the Herald Leader when he says he needs the support of the media. He will get it from all the UK based Internet sites, but it will be a cold day in hell when the Herald takes a favorable bent on anything involving UK athletics.

The Herald Leader does print a story now and then which does not praise. The paper also prints very favorable stories. Should the sole purpose of a newspaper be to cheerlead?

    Ditto the C-J.

I think the fans basically boycotted the games this year. I don’t know if we’ll have 70k right off the bat again, but the fans will be back. Considering the product over the last 60 years, UK has the best football fans in the nation

Terry you hit the nail on the head. There is no doubt considering the product the last 60 years BBN are the best football fans in the country. Two examples come to mind the two Peach Bowls against North Carolina and Clemson–Atlanta could not believe the fans that turned out for Kentucky and the money they brought to town. Wait until we hit the Sugar Bowl the host city of the Big Easy thought the BBN turned out bigtime–they have not seen the really big Blue flood coming down from all parts of the country! Larry Coach Stoops WILL be surprised too! We will start with having standing room only in Nashville against little western! OMG it’s finally going to happen and the BBN will be coming out of the woodwork!!!!!!

Western cannot be considered little until we beat them next year. If Petrino’s team were to beat us in Nashville such statements will make US look little. Nevertheless, we will travel well to Nashville next year. We always supportive when a new coach comes to town. Let us continue the support through the first two to three tough years and look to the future.

What we are seeing with Stoops and company is exactly what we have seen with every football coach that has been hired at UK in the past 50 years plus years. UK football fans want to compete and win in the SEC. We have been excited about a coach from Alabama. We were thrilled with a coach who had coached at Notra Dame. We were sure that an ex UK player would lead us to the promised land. They all failed as have all the hired coaches that we have been excited about since the Bear.BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE SHOULD NOT BE EXCITED ONCE AGAIN…AND I AM. What I am not is willing to be dissapointed again. Barnhart has opened the check book for salaries for Stoops and his assistants. That is a start. Now is time to continue the support from the University AND FOR THE FAN BASE TO EXPECT SUCCESS. NOT ONLY EXPECT SUCCESS BUT DEMAND SUCCESS. It is time that happened.
