One thing Mark Stoops has had to do at Kentucky is manage expectations. He did that most of last year when UK went 2-10. But how will he handle that now that his Cats have opened the season with a 59-14 win over UT-Martin?

“That’s a good question. I think I’ve been saying all along that we’re better. I think it was privy evident today we were better. Watching our team practice the other day and watching our offense go up and down the field on air, it’s evident they were better,” Stoops said.

“I’ve said it over and over again, there were times when we couldn’t do the basics; and we are significantly better, and we’re significantly getting better playmakers.

“So I have a lot of optimism. I don’t know, we always take it one day at a time and one week at a time. Again, I know that’s boring, but we’re 1-0 and excited about that and look forward to getting back to work and prepare to get one next week.’

All of the post game comments and chatter seemed to skirt the issue of where was the D line. UTM’s O line had their way with us the whole game and apparently any adjustments we tried to make were unsuccessful as well. One part of the team playing well and the other not was a common pattern that we saw last year and years before. If Bud and Z couldn’t could handle these dudes how do we have any hope moving forward with league play? The offense exceeded our expectations, and the defense didn’t with the exception of a few key takeaways. The pass defense was very loose as well.

Ahhhhh…..NOW I know its football season!

The Mikeastrator is back for yet another year of expert commentary and analysis!

This is what I’ve missed most!

When you’re up 35-0 at the half you’re not going to show your whole hand. They kept things vanilla on purpose.

  3. Fan

Dude….they were scoreless through 3 quarters and we had our 3rd string in the 4th qtr….give them a break and enjoy the win. Its the first game.

  4. Stephen

Mike doesn’t give breaks…he’s doom and gloom…always looks for the negative….always will! Guys a legend in his own mind!

Rumor has it that the “negative Nancy” known as Mike is actually the long lost, illegitimate son of Jerry Tipton.

Fan….might have been scoreless thru 3 qtrs. but they ran thu us most of the game, we had no outside contain even with starters, and we got no pressure on the quarterback.

I totally agree with mike good when but the D line was non existent on run in plays. They should improve but just be prepared people for just a 4 or 5 win season this year we are getti getting better bit a long ways away from being great.

Hey Mike, listen real good and focus, I’ll type slow for you. Stoops and his staff are now recruiting to sign their 3rd class. It takes 3 full classes just to build a solid BASE. and then depth comes in the years after that.
Just so you won’t be disappointed every week, plan on it. Every week our D Line will be less than what Stoops wants. For the rest of this year, and at times next yr.
But know this, Stoops is ahead of the game right now in year two.

dude they had 150 total yards thru the 1st 3 quarters against our 1st team defense. So please tell me where they ran all over us. Give it up and enjoy it. Its eviedent that this team has improved a lot and is better then people thought. And I know they only played UT-Martin but you can see that they are better all-round team. Go Big Blue!!!!!!

Well Ohio will be a tougher test for our defense, and give Towles better DB’s to throw against. FL only has 1 game to get any kinks worked out now thanks to storms canceling their game against Idaho. We may be in a better position to play them than b4.

All in all really good performance by a team that went back to back 2-10 seasons. To bad some forget that.

Stephen….hey dude, how happy were u with the rushing defense? They ran on us most of the game and got 3-4 yds. per carry. How many times did you hear Bud’s and Z’s name called? Certainly you can contribute more than just saying someone is always negative and gloom and doom.

Hey Mike it means nothing if they don’t score does it? How many take aways did this UK team have? Yes I was surprised that Bud and Z did not get some sacks, etc. But you can’t fault the way the entire defense played to keep UT-M out of the end zone for 3 qtrs.. You lay 59 points on anybody and hold them to 14 points with key reserves in late, and it is progress my friend. It was their first game, so they should improve a lot between the first and second game. After a 59 point offensive performance I don’t have much to gripe about. Is school still out on this team, of course, but they did something special Sat.

Mike, sorry, on the golf course all day. I was pleased with what I saw because it was an improvement over last year….and in his 2nd year, improvements are all I expect from Stoops troops. Bottom line the D was getting a shutout until our lack of depth showed up in the last quarter. “Dude”, these aren’t the Broncos or Seahawks…they are building something here and I LIKED what I saw for THIS team. That’s all that matters to me. You, my friend, will ALWAYS find something to complain about…football or basketball….proof is in the history on here. That enough “contribution” for you?

I have to agree with Mike here. I came into this game expecting complete dominance from our two defensive ends, and there was little to no pressure the whole time. I hope it was just a lazy performance from the two, but it is something to watch going forward.

I thought the D Line played well for the first live action. At best, it’s always 4 vs 5 up front. Bud and Z are going to be worked and double teamed all season. This allowed Mike Douglass a Sack, Matt Elam was able to make his first collegiate tackle with one arm, and CJ Johnson about killed Favre on a QB knock down. IMO, this falls on the line backers as far as the few big runs they had. And you have to think the D Line also had a hand in the interceptions, too.

ha ha! I see what you did here, lmao! nice one

I recall the Ohio U coach once saying to the media over and over that the Kentucky Wildcats were the best team the Bobcats had ever taken the field against. The Cat’s had won a couple games against directional teams. I’m thinking between when I graduated ( 71′) and Commonmouth opening ( 73′ 74′ ?? ). We were still at Stool, I mean Stoll Field if memory serves. Some UK historian please correct me.

Hey Gang, don’t count those little chickens yet.

  12. Mike

Larry….not trying to look for negatives here because it was a heck of an offensive showing and a great W but if our D line looked so flat and bad against a cupcake where are we going to be next week and UF? Guess we will find out real soon.

  13. RJ

To quote Ira “heck of a showing for a team that went 2-10 two years in a row”. I agree with that. But our defense concerns me. The secondary can’t pick up the slack every game like this one.

That was so much fun watching good things happen with UK football. We have one more game and 2 weeks to fine tune for our first serious test. Our team, the product of this outstanding staff, is really gonna be fun to watch. Even the rough times, I think we will have a shot.
