Here is what Kentucky coach Joker Phillips had to say Monday about UK’s quarterback situation going into Saturday’s game with South Carolina.

Question: Will you rethink how you will prep your No. 2 quarterback this week because Max Smith may not be able to go versus last week?
Phillips: “We’ve been prepping Jalen (Whitlow) to be our Number 2 since the Louisville game.  We worked Morgan (Newton) to be the Number 2 going up to the Louisville game, but after the Louisville game we started prepping Jalen to be our Number 2.  When Max went down, we just felt like he (Jalen) wasn’t ready, wasn’t quite ready to go in in that type of environment.
“I’ve been down there when we put a freshman quarterback in there, and it’s pretty tough.  And we just felt like we wanted to start Morgan.  And we did.  Didn’t work out.  Didn’t play as well as we would have liked.  But we still think that that was the right decision.”

Question: If the game was at Commonwealth, would Jalen have started?

Phillips: Who knows.  Again, still ‑‑ this is not just the environment. It’s the team that you’re playing against also.  It’s a really good football team defensively.  So who knows.”

Question: Did you just feel like you had one hand tied behind your back in that game?
Phillips: “No.  I mean I didn’t feel that way.  I just feel like we just couldn’t make a play.  All we needed was a play here, play there.  We had a couple of guys running open.  We also missed some cuts, missed some blocks on the perimeter that would have given us a chance after we did catch the ball.  But I don’t feel like we had our hands tied behind our back.”

Question: Did you rethink at all Patrick Towles as one of the starters?
Phillips: “I’m comfortable with where we’re at, because I think we’ll get Max back.  That’s our feeling, that we’ll get Max back.”
“Again, we decided to allow Jalen to be our third, and we really think that Pat Towles will be a really good quarterback in time, and we just think that this is the best thing for him and for our program at this point.

Question: What’s the diagnosis on Max’s shoulder?
Phillips: “He just reaggravated an old injury from last year.  So it was a deal where if he’d gotten hurt, ‑‑ if you’d have seen him in warmups, he wasn’t 100 percent and if he’d have gotten hurt, they think he could have been out for a significant time, and it wasn’t worth risking.  It wasn’t worth risking, like I said on Saturday.  I was treating him like he was ‑‑ you guys would want your son to be treated.”

Question: What exactly was the old injury that he re-aggravated?
Phillips: “His shoulder.  He had a sprained shoulder, AC joint from last year.”

Question: If for whatever reason Max couldn’t go, do you know at this point if you would go with Morgan or Jalen?
Phillips: “No, don’t know at this point.  But probably Jalen.  I don’t know exactly if we go with Morgan or Jalen.  But I think Jalen would probably deserve based on the way we performed Saturday.  But again, we’ve gotta go through this week and see how everything works out.”

Question: How do you evaluate Max in terms of even day to day?
Phillips: “Again, we gotta evaluate ‑‑ we will not throw on Tuesday.  We’ll see how well he performs on Wednesday and Thursday.  Then make the decision based on that.”

Question: How do you go about getting Jalen enough reps to feel comfortable?
Phillips: “He’s getting the two reps.  And again, we still gotta get Max the one reps.  He can hand the ball off.  So we still gotta get Max ready.  So it’s hard to give either one of the guys 100 percent of the one reps.  So we’ve gotta get him all of the two reps and some of the one reps.  But we also have to get Max some of the reps.  He can hand the ball off; he can make some of the checks in the pass game, but not throw the football.  So there’s a lot of things that we still have to do with him, in case he is the guy on Saturday.”

Question: Do you need to get him more reps in games?
Phillips: ‘It is, yeah.  We haven’t had an opportunity until this past game, and he got a few, not nearly enough.  Not enough to make a difference.”

Uhhmmm, someone help me out here. He can hand off, but not throw and he could be the guy Saturday. What exactly is the answer here? UK going to handle the ball off all day, IF, he is the “guy”?

I see spurrier sitting at the dinner table with his knife and fork at the ready. I also see some confusing defensive packages for the UK’s qb to decipher and i see 4 picks , maybe more. It’s gonna be ugly folks.

  • grant says:

If Max is out there , look for a lot of people up in the box to kill the run and make him pass, it is really a nightmare of a situation for either Jalen or Max . Towles is no where in sight, he clearly is not ready, i see a transfer coming.

  • Bill says:

If he transfers it will be a mistake. I could be wrong, but don’t think so. The qb’s that have transferred in the past have struggled. It’s a tough decision but I wish him the best regardless. As far as SC is concerned, this isn’t a typical gunslinger type Spurrier team. Their win against Vanderbilt was just ugly. They have to run the ball and if they can get enough defenders in the box, then they can throw it. If our defense continues to improve, then it could be interesting – as long as they don’t spend most of the game on the field. It will get ugly if we don’t have someone at qb that can throw short, quick passes accurately. We could always go with a variation of the old single wing and use 3 tight ends? That would definitely catch SC off guard.

If who transfers? Max (which I seriously doubt) or Patrick? If you mean Patrick, I HOPE he doesn’t transfer, but he won’t be the first.

  • Pacman says:

I think the real questions to ask are who will be playing in the offensive line and RB positions on Saturday. If this team could run the ball consistently the pass game becomes much easier. It is very difficult for any QB to be successful in the SEC when he is put consistently in a position of having to convert on 3rd and 7 or more yards. That is the position UK offense consistently finds itself in with no consistent running game.

Jalen whitlow will be the game MVP if he starts or plays heavy mins. He is underrated QB out of high school. Sit back and watch

    • larryvaught says:

have heard nothing but good things about Jalen and has I noted in preseason he reminds me a lot of Cobb the way he carries himself as a freshman

      • Jim says:

Damn! I swear, I just can’t drink the kool aid. I am not against Whitlow. I am against the coaching staff. If I were coach, I would be playing Whitlow and Towles. The future is Towles. The coaching staff seems to have a vision problem. Whitlow can be used at QB, HB, Slot receiver and a bunch of other positions. Randy Sanders? Is he really above reproach? Is Joker? I am not a fan of their system. Why? Because change kills them in their tracks and they can not adapt on the fly.

  • OldFan says:

I don’t have any confidence in Joker’s abilty to select a quarterback. Joker raves about Jalen, but in the past he has also said the exact same things about Morgan Newton. almost word-for-word – look where Morgan is now. Joker tried every way in the world to keep Morgan ahead of Max Smith and if Morgan had not gone done, we would not even know who Max Smith is. Also, Joker raves about all these other freshman, how great they are, game changers he says, and then seldom calls a play for them. If they are that good use them to change the game. If they are not, shut up about them. Most every team in the SEC has freshman making playes. Are we the only ones that don’t have those types of players? Every year Joker talks about how much better they will be. How much better they look in practice, etc. The only team UK has even competed with this year is the only team in America that was worse than them last year, that is not saying much about your improvement. I have no confidence in Joker’s abilty to evaluate his team or anyone elses.

  • P90XDude says:

Oldfan is absolutely correct! Why did Joker recruit Towles if he wasn’t going to give him a chance to compete?

  • Seymour says:

Old saying: Most popular player on a losing team is the back up QB.

Face it folks, this team is sub par SEC at most every position, except maybe the kicking game and McIntosh let us down Saturday. It does not matter who Joker starts at QB, we gonna gets our butts handed to us at SC.

  • fan fan says:

Towels competed like everyone else. Just didn’t work out for him. He’s just not that good. Players has spoken on it. Go ahead and transfer but no matter the water if you can swim
