Here’s a chance to post your get-well message for John Calipari after hip surgery

Normally John Calipari likely would have been at a Kentucky Derby party Friday and likely could have been at Churchill Downs today for the Derby.

But this year he was a little more occupied — he had successful hip replacement surgery Friday after obviously limping to the finish of Kentucky’s championship run.

Recruiting, NBA discussions with his players and a promotional tour for his new book delayed the surgery Calipari has known he needed for months until Friday.

Kentucky’s twitter account posted: “All went well. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers for him.”

Calipari, 55, had his right hip replaced Friday. He had his left one replaced back in 2004 when he was coaching at Memphis.

Here’s your chance to wish him well and we’ll send the messages to the UK basketball office.

Coach Cal, I am glad the surgery went well! I just wanted to say I am really proud of the way you have handled yourself and the Kentucky basketball program. You truly have returned Kentucky to The Gold Standard of college basketball.

I have truly enjoyed the players you have recruited to play for UK. That they have performed so admirably, is a tribute to your outstanding leadership.

BBN has had no embarrassments under your leadership. The players have come in and performed , both on the court, in the classrooms, and especially in interacting with the fans of BBN. This is something I am quite sure is quite hard for 5 star recruits.

I hope everything always goes well for you and your family as long as you continue as “our Coach”!

  17. Becky

I’ve been praying for you and hope for the best for you. Hope you feel better soon. Hope you can see some Derby today. It will get better. Just be sure to have a ton of books and tv show dvds like The Big Bang Theory. Also, be sure to do as your told except for the people telling you to go to the NBA.

  18. Gary L

Prayers for a quick and complete recovery. Take time for yourself and to be with your family during this time. Remember the advice you gave your son in his recovery and put them to good use for yourself. :) May God be with you today and forever.

D Miller, D Lamb & T Jones came to my place of employment & it was wild & pictures were taken. Fans were lined up. I am sure they thought everyone was crazy. I love Big Blue & want the best for all these young men. Wish you the best for this next season. Go Big Blue!!!!!

  33. Ben

Good luck coach! You know it takes hard work to accomplish anything worthwhile! You are worth everything to us. God bless you and your family. May you have a speedy and successful recovery. You are the best Coach, Father, Husband and Person!

  34. Rob

I hope you are up and moving soon getting some valuable family time during the off season is important. Born and raised in Kentucky, joined the Army 31 years ago and have moved all around the world. I have seen up and downs in UK basketball. I will say UK basketball over the last 5 to 6 years has been at the highest since I started watching The wildcats in 1978. I thank and salute you for all you do on and off the court.

  35. TheColoradoWildcat

    Coach Cal…

What a Blessing to have you as our Coach, and to have your family inter-acting with our players, being their “away” family. So appreciate your “player first” attitude.

Many coaches just use players for what they can get from them during the time they have them, then could care less what happens to them from that point on. You and your family,on the other hand, “invest” yourselves in them, not only as Coach, but you go out of your way to prepare them not just for the next level, but for life! Monetary values, giving to others not just receiving, because you have learned that in giving, you have received already. Humility. Sharing. Team vs “me.”

Then, you reach out the the other Wildcat Coaches, programs, and support them, and encourage the rest of the BBN to do the same. It truly is not all about Coach Cal. What a Blessing indeed!

It is so obvious the love and respect our former players have for you Coach, in the fact that they keep in touch with you, return to work on finishing degrees, or just coming by for a visit. You have reached out to former Cats that you did not even Coach, and Coach Joe B, telling them “we are family!”

Well, during this time of recovery, The Big Blue Nation [your extended family] is reaching out to you to express our good wishes, our prayers for your speedy recovery, so that you can get back to what you do best -guiding young boys into manhood. They seem like young boys to me when they commit to become a Wildcat, as I’m about 55 years older then most of them.

Time for a little “coach-first” time. So well deserved I might add.

Oh, and forget about the “Dribble-Drive” for a couple weeks: baby steps to start Coach. :-)

God Bless You and Your Family.

Thank you for being at Kentucky.

    GO BLUE!

  39. Karen Sprinkle

Best wishes for a speedy and relatively pain-free recovery. Be sure and follow the directions of the doctors/staff, and you’ll soon be bouncing up and down on the sideline again, teaching these young men not only about basketball, but also life lessons.

  40. Glenna Harris

Dear Cal: We are so glad that your operation is over. We love you and hope you are back to 100% soon. P.S. Get some rest too.

  41. Gary Grisham

Glad to hear you’re doing well coach. Tis not an easy thing you are going through. Hang in there and know that all of BBN is wishing you a quick and painless recovery.

god bless coach cal great job relax and spend time with wife and family, see you in the fall.
    Big Blue Nation forever.

  44. Ed Mueller

Hope you get well soon coach.

As a displaced member of the BBN in Tarheel country who put in a 14 hour workday on his birthday because that’s what it takes to “get to the next level” in my business, I say to you, best wishes on a speedy recovery, thank you for all you have done and continue to do for the BBN, and never forget the little things in life that make you smile.

From one servant to another coach, get well soon, and help these young men grow into respected and successful adults. That’s what every teacher, and every mentor is tasked with every day. Your press conferences resonate with me, and at 20 years your junior, I learn from them regularly.

So thank you coach. You’re not JUST teaching the pupils in front of you.

  45. Theresa Crow

Coach, just wanted to let you that prayers were lifted up for you, the surgeon and surgery team on Friday and that prayers will be continuing for your complete recovery. Also, want to thank you for a wonderful season…so proud of everything this team accomplished. Because I live and work in middle TN, I had folks at work coming by just to make sure I was ok after the Championship game. I told them that while I was sad I was far from devastated over the loss–in fact, I was too busy rejoicing over the post-season to even stay sad for very long. I hope that gives you a smile while you are recuperating. Please rest, relax, do your physical therapy and take time to rejuvenate your body and your spirit because we can all see how much you give. The BBN is very much appreciative for all that you do for our team, our Commonwealth, and the BBN itself. You do us proud!

  46. RONNIE
