Okay, this site is devoted to UK athletics. But today you have to indulge me — or maybe not since I am sure my 1-year-old grandson, Colby, will be a Kentucky fan if his parents have their way.

Sportswriters have terrific careers, but the odd, long hours also require us to miss a lot of family functions since game schedules are not set around birthdays, anniversaries, school programs, etc. That’s why I’ve tried to spend all the time I can with my grandchildren. It’s like a second chance to connect.

And I had one of those Verizon moments — yes, my Verizon Samsung Galaxy was in my pocket when I needed it most to capture this video (and others I have shared from UK football, UK basketball, McDonald’s All-American Game — that I thought why not share with you. We only turn 1 once, and my grandson made the most of his first birthday cupcake. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

That is so cute, he looks so sweet! Aren’t grandsons the best?
What do you mean he won’t be a Kentucky fan, what is wrong with his parents? Please tell me he will not be a fan of that ‘other’ school, please Larry, please.
    Happy Birthday to Colby!

I’m happy that there is a grandson to carry on what grandpa and great grandpa started.

What was up with the chocolate cupcake with red icing, Larry? Geez. Just kidding. Sure is a cute little feller, and he WAS trying to answer your questions, it seems.

Happy birthday to Colby! My mother thinks being a grandparent is the highest pinnacle of parenthood. I think you might agree. :-)

He attacked that cupcake like a linebacker. You should be very proud Larry V. He is a champ. Great looking boy. Thanks for sharing the moment. We don’t get very many of those before they are grown and gone.

Thank you for sharing your grandson with us, he is a handsome little guy. Grandchildren are wonderful, gives new meaning to that old saying ” if I had known grandchildren were so much fun i would have had them first.”

Thanks Jan. Pretty near and dear to my heart

HAPPY BIRTHDAY little fella. I’m glad you got to be there Larry. I missed my sons first Christmas, Birthday and steps. However, I did get to do other “firsts” with him. Bike ride, football and baseball game and his HS graduation. I hope you get to see and be part of many more events.

Happy 1st birthday, Colby!! Too cute!! Looks like the cupcake was Coach Cal’s favorite – red velvet.

Trublue and LoveSEC, it was a great time. Little guy just dove in. His brother ate the blue cupcake

Larry – This is a great video. That is one way to deal with the color red.
I know that you and Penny are enjoying these special grandchildren!
