Drew Barker: “I’m at the basics right now”

Here’s part of Ashley Scoby’s postgame interview with freshman quarterback Drew Barker Saturday — and the full, lengthy interview will follow later this afternoon with some dandy quotes and insights on what makes Barker special.

On what the one thing is he’ll push to work on the most during this summer…

Barker: “Probably just consistency maybe. Consistency like with everything – the playbook, the signals. That’s the main point – reads and everything – of learning the offense and taking them to a new level. I’m at the basics right now. I just got here so over the summer I’m really going to get into the playbook and hopefully when fall camp comes around, I’m going to be a complete master of the playbook.”

On what he considers to be his strengths right now…

Barker: “I’m not really sure. We all bring different stuff so I mean, I don’t know if I could speak for myself on that. You might have to ask the other guys on the team.”

Just a HS star, and he goes out there for spring practice at UK and competes. He goes into the SG and throws a 30 yard TD strike for the UK Blue team, beautiful. He has a cannon for an arm. He has leadership qualities too. He is the future QB for the Big Blue in due time IMO. A year or so on the training table, the weight room, and the coaching will bring him a long nicely. A red shirt year maybe? The problem right now is he has two pretty good ones ahead of him who are more familiar with this offense. When he knows it, look out boys.

Yeah, I think this kid is going to be a hell’va and player. Keep his nose clean, work hard and wait for his time.
