The request might have flustered some players, but not Kentucky freshman DeMarcus Cousins.
He was asked during the recent UK Women’s BasketballI Clinic if he minded being kissed by one of those attending the clinic.
“They wanted to take a picture and kiss me, so I just let them do it to be nice. Why not? It was kind of surprising when they asked, but it was cool and actually a lot of fun. I guess you could say I enjoyed it,†Cousin said.
Teammates are sure he did.
“I don’t even know if that story is true, but I know he talks to just about every girl on campus. He doesn’t miss a one. So if it is true, it doesn’t surprise me and I guarantee you he enjoyed it,†UK freshman Daniel Orton said.
Actually, Cousins seems to be enjoying everything about being a Kentucky player. He joked with fans lined up for tickets to Big Blue Madness. He cut up at Big Blue Madness. He likes signing autographs when he’s out.
“It’s all so much fun here. You have the fans showing you so much love. It is just fun here all the time,†he said. “Coach Cal is cool. He is real down to earth. He treats us like family like he said he would when he was recruiting us. It’s all good.â€Â
Don’t worry about any personnel issues, either.
“The whole thing about coming together and how we mesh is that basically it is a whole new team. We have never played under Cal before. Everybody is coming in and learning. We all start from the bottom up, so we will come together easily because it’s new to all of us,†Cousins said. “Plus, we all want that (national championship) ring and know if we don’t mess it up, we can get one this year.â€Â

Larry, this article really captures the magic of college players. It is so great to hear about how excited and accommodating they are. So many of them lose that quality shortly after moving to the next level. Which, don’t get me wrong, is very necessary because of the demands on their time and the exponential growth in the number and demands of fans at that level. You get to talk to them before they become jaded or overwhelmed by the whole “fame” thing. You see them when it is new and exciting instead of a burden. I hope that DeMarcus is one of the lucky ones who doesn’t let the notoriety become a ball and chain as he moves up. He seems to have a very special personality.
Demarcus and P Pat on the floor together is going to be a horror for any team that faces kentucky this season. Great article I would really love to see a write up on Daniel Orton if it is at all possible, he is a super talented player and reminds me of a bigger more physically gifted Chuck Hayes I think he is also going to be a very special for the boys in blue. Thanks for all the great articles Larry I got a couple months left at fort polk till I get back to Lexington for good and hopefully get to that UNC game!
This kid having a good year is going to be a big key to the team’s success this year. Like a lot of European big men, he can handle in transition and has a good face up game. Some even see him as playing a 3 in the NBA. Along with Harrelson, he’s going to be one of the guys that will make it hard for teams to zone us. when you have a 6’10 guy that can handle and shoot, it makes for crazy match up nightmares. I have the game against UNC circled as the first real test. They are one of the few teams in the country that can match up pretty well against us inside. Miss State will also be a huge test. If we find a consistent outside threat, we will be a tough team to beat.
I love trying to show the human side of these kids — and they are just kids. I agree Carlos about Cousins being the key. In fact, he could well be the one who determines if this is a Final Four team because of his versatility.
And Patrick, thank you for what you are doing for us. Glad I can make your day a little brighter
BIG CUZ As he like to be called(asked him the friday camp out) is a very nice kid. Friendly, funny and he does seem to really embrace the fans. I don’t know if I have met a freshman as at ease with the BBN as he has been. What do you think Larry? I mean they are all nice young men but he seems to really enjoy the fans.
The more we hear the more we like; almost too good to be true sometimes seems like a movie script, maybe you should do a book and or a movie on Coach Calipari’s first year as head coach.
From meeting Cousins at UK Media Day, I can agree with the above! First off, he is the joker of the team for sure. It got silent when the players entered the gym before starting interviews. He wasn’t going to have all that seriousness. He right away began to make some funny noises as he walked to his seat. I appreciated that because it helped me be much less nervous
. I also witnessed his excitement about playing at UK. One of the most meaningful things I learned from media day was the excitement and closeness of all the players, including Cousins. This, I think, is just as important (if not more important) as how well they play the game.

Miss Kentucky USA 2009
Another great one Larry! Hey Im gonna be in town next Wed night for the scrimmage so I hope to see you there and talk to ya like we did at the Alabama game. You’re the best sports journalist in the state concerning BIG BLUE so I hope to see you there. Keep the great articles comin, you do a great job
Thank you Maria, Miss Kentucky, for joining the fun here and being one of us at vaughtviews.com after writing such a wonderful story for us earlier this week and doing such great videos. Maria will be back at the EAstern football game with me.
And Catintn will be looking for you.
Big Cuz could be one of a kind. No doubt about that. He truly likes the big stage. But Wall and Bledsoe are pretty cool too. However, as Maria noted, Cousins is the one who seems to be able to make everybody else relax
Larry,
How did you get that picture with Miss Kentucky? I want to be Larry Vaught or DeMarcus Cousins and have Maria Montgomery take her picture with me. Too pretty!
Thanks again Larry for another wonderful article. Makes it that much better whenever you have Miss Kentucky reinforce the write up with additional insight. Wow!!!
She is a gorgeous young lady. I hope you took time to watch the videos she did. Go to past stories and find her column here and you will see the videos. She took some great pictures with Patterson and the other players, too. Amazing how willing they were to spend time with her. Me? I just got lucky. I knew her when she was a high school cheerleader here. Hope to have her interview Chuck Smith in a couple of weeks for all of you
Have you seen the movie “Being John Malkovich”?
I’d pay 20 bucks to be in control of Big C for 10 minutes.
We are two of the four girls from the Women’s Clinic that asked DeMarcus if we could take a picture with him as a group and all four of us kissed him as the picture was being taken. We are glad that Big Cuz enjoyed his kiss as much as we did. Skirt magazine has took a picture of the whole incident. Love your blog. The Mount Sterling Kissin’ Cousins
Thank you Kissin’ Cousins.
