When 6-9 Bullitt East junior standout Derek Willis makes his college choice Friday, that will end his recruitment no matter whether he picks Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana or Purdue.
He’s already de-committed from Purdue, a choice he made as a sophomore and then had second thoughts about. However, he’s now ready to finalize his college choice.
“It was more of a surprise to me that he decided to do this now, but this had been weighing on him the last month and was starting to affect him on the court. He feels pretty comfortable and confident he is making the right decision. He also doesn’t want to let other schools keep recruiting him and wasting their time when they could use their time and resources toward another recruit,†said Delbert Willis, Derek’s father.
The family had a two-hour meeting with Bullitt East coach Troy Barr Sunday to make sure everything was ready to be set in stone about the college choice. Delbert Willis and his wife met with Barr for about an hour and then brought in Derek Willis.
“I just want him to be clear there will be no more de-commitments. We have been through that and are not going to do it again. I told him I am 100 percent behind him and love him and want him to be happy, but I want him firm with this decision and he is,†Delbert Willis said. “He is standing by it once he announces it.
“If he gets mail from other schools, just throw it in the trash. That is it. No more going to games of other schools. Only one official visit. That’s it. He understands all that. He doesn’t need his ego stroked. He is more of a laid-back kid.â€
Barr said it’s hard to explain the pressure that is on an in-state player being heavily recruited by both Kentucky and Louisville. Recently coaches John Calipari of Kentucky and Rick Pitino of Louisville were at the same game watching him play. Daily fans of both teams ask the player and his parents where he’ll go to school. Same with media members, recruiting analysts.
“The attention can be a little smothering,†Barr said. “He feels great about his choice and is ready to make it so he can concentrate on the rest of his high school career.
“We’ve talked that the No. 1 thing was that he’s got to be sure about his choice. He’s been thinking hard about this. He’s done his research. He’s been everywhere and knows what to expect. Derek knows every kid that is getting recruited in his class by every school talking to him. He knows who will be his teammates and how he’ll fit in. He knows what he’s getting into.â€
Schools know what they will be getting, too. One coach recruiting him refers to him as a “more athletic Kyle Wiltjer and that’s no knock on Wiltjer because he’s really good.â€
Barr says Willis is the “best passer, best rebounder, best shot blocker on our team.†He’s already had a triple-double and the coach sill hopes he’ll have a quadruple double with points, rebounds, blocks and assists.
Bullitt East is 14-3 and ranked in the top five and Barr says Willis is “having a good year†despite the mental pressure he’s been under due to his recruiting.
“He’s scoring more (about 17 points per game) and blocking more shots,†Barr said. “I would like to see him get more points, especially since we lost a kid averaging in double figures a few weeks ago. I think his high is 26 points, but he’s not a selfish player. He knows he does not have to score for us to be successful.
“Right now his shot blocking is the one thing that separates us from most teams. He is such a defensive presence on the block and has probably already set the career blocked shot record for our school. He’s no Anthony Davis (who leads the nation in blocked shots at Kentucky), but he’s close. I really want him to be a more assertive scorer and he’s capable of being a prolific scorer.â€
Both Barr and Delbert Willis have heard/read comments about Derek Willis’ lack of athleticism by some.
“There are people out there who question his athleticism, but he’s very athletic. I think he’s faster than Kyle Wiltjer and has better footwork. His shooting is probably not quite what Kyle’s is yet,†Barr said.
But if Willis picks Kentucky — and I think he will — the comparisons to Wiltjer will really pick up along with the fan attention.
“Everybody in the family has been impacted some by the Kentucky-Louisville recruiting,†Delbert Willis said. “It just comes with the territory and most people have no clue what it can be like to go through this.
“But I’ve also told Derek if he goes to Purdue, Indiana, Kentucky or Louisville, he’s going to be even more sought after. All four school love their players and idolize them. Once he makes his commitment, he’ll get more autograph requests. If it’s Kentucky or Louisville, it will be 10 to 20 times more. Gyms will be a little more full of fans wanting to see the new kid play. That’s why he has to be sure about this and he says he is.â€

Damn, I hope I’m wrong but this sounds like another Daniel Orton and Daddy routine.
UK does NOT need anymore of that!!
I know both the kid and the parent and I coached Derek in baseball, he was a stud at baseball, and is going to be a stud on the court. Del, is doing what any father would do for his son, and I’m here to tell you that when Derek is playing Del completely eliminates himself from the picture and doesn’t get involved. He gets a bad rap because he’s involved, but who wouldn’t want to be involved with such a big decision? Del and Derek both are class guys and good folks. Mark my word, once Derek signs you will not see or hear anything from Del other than cheering for his son and the team.
Agree 100 percent with Kevin. Dad has been helpful, not a problem. Hoping to be there Friday for announcement myself. It will be KENTUCKY. I just believe that from all the bits and pieces I am hearing.
Thinkin the talent UK brings in yearly, he will be lost there.
Don’t think he would be lost there at all. Will make him better. Will allow him to play to his strengths, will practice against the best making him better and will get the chance to go against the best in competition. Seems like a team-first player, which is what Cal is looking for. If he works, tries his best, keeps improving, he will play. Remember, he is only a junior and will get bigger and stronger this next year as well.
I think Willis will really be good. Remember, Cal’s track record with recruits is pretty darn good. If he says he can play, good enough for me. And big-time schools don’t start offering scholarships to sophomores who cannot play. Willis has a lot of tools, and he is 6-8
I don’t think it’s near as bad as that. Things will play themselves out and the young man will ultimately make the correct decision
Gut says the dreaded Hoosiers.
Not my 1st pick for the 2013 class this class is loaded. He may be a 4 year player which will be good but with what is possible with this class I see him as fighting for playing time. May be a stud in Kentucky but in national terms.
Sounds like the Hoosiers to me…….He says he knows who his teammates are going to be???? That aint Kentucky. Not with our revolving door.
I’m sold on this kid’s talents…sure hope we get him!
Bottom line, I would love to have him because our coaches want him. Some fans want all top 20 players, but give me a blend of teammates with various skills and good attitudes. Willis sounds like a kid who will develop and produce at UK.
I’ve posted on the KY board several times about my belief, and will share it here. I don’t like all the one and dones. Sure it looks good to have 5 or more players going pro, but personally, it takes me a while to get to know our new team each year. NOW be very clear, I’m not arguing with the results, and I agree, I’d rather have the talent on our favorite UK team as opposed to having to play against them. But consider the last several national chapions, they are a mix of great freshmen and very very good upper classmen. If that’s not a good enough argument, consider the great run the Bulls, Chicago Bulls that is, had. They had the two superstars, Jordan and Pippen, then really very, very good role players that filled in, and great bench contributions. I believe if we are to have a real program that can sustain the success for many years, we need to have some really good guys who are going to be around longer than a year. Consider where this team would be if we get on serious injury to say MKG? Against UT he was mugged and was left on the floor at least two times looking hurt. Consider what happens if we don’t have the super recruiting year we’ve had the last three years? We all know we won’t continue to have the number one ranked class, we won’t continue to always get the very best. And let’s not even think about when Coach Cal leaves. We will definitely need to have some great guys ready to step in and a pipeline full of recruits.
Go CATS!!!!!!
Since Cal has been here he has brought in top-notched kids. If Cal wants him I want him.
I am with you Don. Hard to second guess CAl on recruiting
I wish him well whomever he chooses. We would love for him to go to UK, but it is ultimately his decision. And, I am so glad he has a loving, caring dad to him make the decision by listening to his hopes and aspirations. Not all kids are that lucky. Best of lucky Mr. and Mrs. Willis in your son’s upcoming decision.
Nice comments Sarah. Still think he is UK bound
I think Willis would be great at Kentucky. The fans already love him. He has the skill set to be a great player in the Calipari dribble drive, and the defensive skills that Calipari loves. Playing for Kentucky is something special! I think he would regret going anywhere else. Good Luck!
Willis would be great at Kentucky. not good, but great before his career ends
The one thing this kid has that I love other than talent is he is a Kentucky native. Having talent is great, but we don’t seem to bring in enough local talent. I love all of our team, but Miller is my favorite because his roots are in our state. Willis will be loved at UK for his talent, but will be ADORED because he is a Kentucky boy. STAY HOME DEREK!
You said it well Patrick
Sounds like a Bellarmine kid. Would get great education, play all the time, and most likely win a national title. He’ll end up there for sure if he commits to Louisville after he sees that coach P won’t play him.
