Larry on Twitter

Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl paid John Calipari a major compliment at the Southeastern Conference Media Day Thursday.

“John Calipari does the best job in college basketball of getting talented players to play together. Nobody does it better,” said Pearl.

The Tennessee coach still thinks Florida, not Kentucky or Tennessee, is the team to beat in the SEC this year. However, he also says juniors Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins could be the key to Kentucky’s success.

“The returning players at Kentucky will have to play new roles. Watch those returning players,” Pearl said. “Those are the guys that will make a big difference this year.”

He said Kentucky’s past basketball success set the bar for SEC teams and Florida raised it by winning back-to-back national titles.

“Kentucky is going to have another great year. They just reload,” Pearl said. “They will be terrific.”

Well it is kind of hard to believe, but coach Pearl learned a valuable lesson as of late, I believe it was IT ALWAYS PAYS TO TELL THE TRUTH!!!!

Larry, did he cough or choke or maybe put his hands behind his back with his fingers crossed Did he giggle, or smirk? Was there a fake halo above his head to make everyone think he was indeed being good?

Enough of the jokes, it was nice of him to say it,(was he wearing blue)I know I said enough.

  • Jim Boyers says:

I posted in Larry’s earlier story about Hopson, that Brucie would be a lot easier to take this year because he wouldn’t be able to act as holier-than-thou as usual. Looks like it is already starting.

I bet he ran straight back to the bathroom and scrubbed his tongue with those nasty brown paper towels. Saying those things just HAD to make him throw up in his mouth a little.

    GO BIG BLUE!!!!

  • LindaS says:

I think someone wrote a script for him, those are not his words, no way! He is listening to some PR people, trying to put forth a new image. He has a long way to go as far as I am concerned. I wish I was a journalist for a big time media outlet. I sure would write something about him and a few other little nobodies who think they can get away with what ever they want. Has everyone forgotten already what this slime ball did, how he bended the rules? Why hasn’t he been fired? Why is he trying to play nice now? He’s not being nice Jan, he trying to save his butt any way he can. I also think there is someone standing behind him moving his lips for him and impersonating his voice. Better yet, it was a hologram. I never liked the guy and I still don’t like the guy. I have him up there with Tark the Shark. Makes my skin crawl! GO CATS! FREE ENES, PLEASE! NEUTER THAMEL!

  • LindaS says:

BTW what was said was true but I will never admit he said it! GO CATS! FREE ENES, PLEASE! NEUTER THAMEL!

  • David says:

I am not a fan but hearing Pearl last year and this year, he has says nice things about UK.

Does he mean it? Does he think that of Cal? No idea. But I was shocked last year at how complimentary of UK and generally charming Pearl was.

Or I could have been hypnotized by the orange coat. : )

  • Sarah White says:

I still think he cheated because Cal was breathing down his neck and he felt threatened.

  • Andy says:

I can’t really tell if he saying things to be nice or if he genuinely means it, either way doesn’t matter, because UK will beat them at home and on the road and in the sec tournament, we will own you Brucie and make Tobias Harris wish he was a WILDCAT!!

  • Gavin S. says:

Pearl is just buttering up Cal for an assts job for when his oily ass gets kicked to the curb.

  • Wheatgerm says:

“Neuter Thamel” is not only unfunny, it’s offensive. I don’t like the guy, but forced castration or genital mutilation is out of bounds. Sorry, but that’s how I feel. I didn’t find Lorena Bobbitt amusing either. Please rethink what you’re saying, Linda.

  • 7mm-08 says:

As much as I can’t stand Pearl he is good for the SEC and makes the rivalry fun. I can’t remember the specifics, but didn’t he make some pretty disparaging comments about Kentucky (the state) in the past?

  • 7mm-08 says:

@Wheatgerm I’m hoping that is sarcasm. Do you REALLY think Neuter Thamel is meant literally? I’m SMH as the Twitter generation would “say”.

  • larryvaught says:

Just have fun, and still stunned Pearl complimented Cal the way he did

  • Jan in Indiana says:

Wheatgerm, I have had the chance to get to know Linda, she is just letting off some steam with that statement. You know as well as the rest of us know that is not going to happen. She is just tired of that so called journalist taking our team and hanging them out to dry.I don’t know if you ever read KSR or not but if you do and you read the article by Matt Jones about the Women’s Basketball Clinic that Coach Cal held on October 6th then you know he thought she stole the show when she said it after she asked Coach Robic a question.Everyone has their own opinion and you are entitled to yours, however she is entitled to hers also.

Let’s just do as Larry said and have some fun, and if it bothers you that much just skip over her comments, I don’t think she will care.

  • LindaS says:

I wasn’t going to give the satisfaction of acknowledging the comment that was made directed at me. However as many people who know me from this site I have a hard time sometimes keeping my fingers off the keyboard. And there have been worse things said here than what I have said. It is not meant literally. But since a man made the comment and I know how sensitive men are about their private parts I can understand why he might have been offended. After the way Thamel has gone after some of the boys in the program he more or less has done the same thing to them. He has degraded and humiliated them and their families. He has literally called them cheaters and worthless. He has taken one young boy who is not even out of high school yet and ran his name through the mud. He tried to destroy him and his family as well. He nearly ruined his future. There is not any punishment good enough for him and to say what I have been saying is only tongue in cheek. I could say off with his head, nuke him or anything else and it would still be offensive to many people. When you have a dog or a horse that is out of control you take that animal and you have him fixed to control him or even worse you put him down. Thamel needs to be controlled as well as several other hateful journalist who seem to be out to destroy not only the young boys who commit to Kentucky but the coach and program as well. There is not a watch dog or police to check journalist who print unethical stories about anyone not matter who they are or what lifestyle they live. I do not wish harm on any of these people, I wish they would clean their act up but that is not going to happen. Many journalist today lack integrity and ethics, except for our Larry. Two prime attributes that I value as well as truthfulness. I don’t see any of those in Thamel. It is a free country with free speech as we have seen with what Thamel and the rest who have been taking a hatchet to Kentucky. Wheatgerm you might find it offensive, it has been on this site for months so why mention it now? Also, Matt Jones said it was the highlight of his evening at the Women’s clinic. Coach Cal thought it might be a good idea. J. Tipton quoted it in his column in the LHL and it was also used in many other websites. I’m sure they all understood and read between the lines that it was not meant literally. We are all entitled to our opinion. If you were to go to any bar where UK fans gather you will hear much worse. GO CATS! FREE ENES, PLEASE! NEUTER THAMEL!

    Well said Linda.

I’m not offended as a man or a person by the “Neuter Thamel” thing. It’s all in good fun and should be taken that way.

    GO BIG BLUE!!!!

  • Nashville Cat says:

As a person who tell’s jokes in order to pay my bills, I find the Neuter Thamel line not only funny, but in no way offensive. I can only assume that Linda means it as a joke. That journalistically speaking, he should be neuterd and not allowed to spread his seed of lies. I do not belive for one second that Linda is suggesting that someone drive to NY, seduce Pete with a story about Jamal Mashburn selling crack to John Hoods family, meet him in an alley in the Bronx, and cut off his junk. I may be wrong, that may be exactly what she means. But I’m pretty sure she’s just joking.

I agree with Jim, neither me nor my junk is offended.

Back to the sweaty orange man pig. I dont think anything pearl said was too out of this world. Few people would argue those points, even the Cal haters. I dont see this as a buttering up. Pearl I’m sure was buttery before the comment.

  • larryvaught says:

Linda truly means it to be funny to make her point about Thamel’s opinion

  • LindaS says:

Thanks, for the good words and glad the ones who know did find the humor in it which is the way it was intended!

UT Letter: Pearl knew he was breaking NCAA rules

In a letter to Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl terminating his contract, University of Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton says Pearl knew he was breaking NCAA rules by hosting recruits at his home, and he asked the recruits and their families to keep quiet about it.

Pearl, UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton, and UT-Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek held a news conference September 10th to announce that Pearl’s salary was being cut after he admitted lying to the NCAA during an ongoing investigation.

Through Tennessee’s Public Records Act, 10 News has a obtained a letter sent from Hamilton to Pearl the day before that announcement. In it, Hamilton tells Pearl his contract will be terminated on October 8th.

Given the Vaught’s Views’ restriction on multiple links in a single post, I will make a follow up post with additional information, including a link to a PDF of the actual letter from AD Hamilton to Pearl.

    NEWS!!!!!!

UT Letter To Pearl Terminating his contract and agreeing to continue employing him on an at will basis going forward.

    http://www.wbir.com/pdf/102110_pearlnotice.pdf

I can’t copy and paste segments of this letter from a PDF file. Read it for yourself. All the talk last month that UT could not/would not get rid of this man was based on incomplete information. They already have terminated the very contract that the analysis relied upon in forming those conclusions, and UT is now in a position to end their relationship with this clown at any time of their choosing.

Is it any wonder now why he seems to be on such good behavior at the SEC media days.

  • TheProfessor says:

Linda, neuter Thamel is how I feel too, but in the sense that you intend it, and we all understand that you intend it. Eliminate his power and authority as a journalist so he can no longer attack without provocation.

  • Papablu says:

..count me as not offended by Linda’s comment. I appreciate the fact that she can say it (which I think it is funny as it is intended), as well as Wheatgerm being able to say that they are offended by it.

I am also pretty sure that Larry appreciates your readership Wheatgerm as well as all of the other regulars which I personally think bring great comments to the blog every day. I enjoy reading Larry’s articles as well as his guest comtributors.

Now to get back on topic…..I think Pearl’s personality is good for the SEC but not his cheating. We need good coaches to compete and make the conference competitive not just provide “smoke and mirrors” and entertainment.

Though unlike the Pitino “freak show” style of entertainment he has provided lately Pearl may have crossed the line. I doubt that Tennessee will be nearly as tolerable as UL has been.

  • JackB says:

Pearl is just going through his post-NCAA-caught-lying humble stage. Stansbury is the coach on the current I-hate-all-things-Cal-and-UK stage right now. Stansbury is still steaming over the OT foul calls in regular season and Wall’s line violation and miracle comeback in SEC Tourney.

What’s funny is that he should feel UK’s pain. Look at at the Sydney situation last year.

  • creature says:

    SPROUT WHEATGERM!

(A couple of hours under a heat lamp should do it.)

  • Nashville Cat says:

i didn’t know stansbury felt that way Jack. makes sense. if he would spend more time actually coaching though maybe he wouldnt be so mad. worst coaching job in the SEC i think. Stallings is right behind him on the hate bandwagon though. while we are nominating people to get snipped, I’ll through his name into the hat.

  • LindaS says:

Professor, thank you for your understanding. Coming from you that meant means a lot to me. And I checked out the links you included in your reply about old Brucie. As stated in the article, Hamilton tells Pearl his contract will be terminated on October 8th. As reasons for the termination, the letter cites clauses in the contract involving “gross misconduct including dishonesty and other acts involving intolerable behavior,” WHY DIDN’T THEY TERMINATE HIM??? Doesn’t termination mean FIRED?
“At your house, you admitted to the unofficial visitors and their families that their presence at your house was a violation of NCAA rules. You also told the unofficial visitors and their families that you were not going to tell anyone about the NCAA rules violation, and you asked that they not tell anyone either.”
Now tell me, after all the lies that Pearl told, the blatant NC2A violation, Pearl telling recruits and parents they were not to be there and to keep it quiet, how can UT keep Pearl?
Am I missing something in this? Is the NC2A blind? Is this not worse than anything Kentucky has done in recent years? Is this not on the same scale as open envelopes with money pouring out? He “failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance.” Until a new contract is signed, Pearl could be fired or quit at any time. DUH, what is keeping them from firing him now? Is winning that important? Why is the NC2A keeping quiet on this one? Where are Thamel and the rest of the sharks on this story? Maybe they could investigate to see if his underwear is clean or not, maybe he has athletes feet. Surely they could find something to drag his name through the news and then throw all this in along with it. He is an employee at will, dag gone, he should be gone, gone, gone…makes no sense to me. It seems like he could get by with murder and pillage and still keep his job. Termination in UT terms mean employee at will until he gets caught again or the NC2A issues big time sanctions on them? GO CATS! FREE ENES, PLEASE! NEUTER, THAMEL!

  • LindaS says:

Nashvillecat, you got it, is that another line you are gonna steal from me? LOL
@Papablu Pearl’s personality may be good, but would someone please steal the orange jacket, that thing is so ugly and out of style. He should only wear it on Halloween! However, it might look good when he goes to visit his players who might end up in jail. Go Cats! Free Enes, Please! Neuter, Thamel!

  • TheProfessor says:

Linda, I can’t explain the situation you describe, but I have an opinion. With the original contract, there was no contractually enforceable basis for firing him, so they confronted Brucie with his offenses, and offered him the option of canceling his original contract and moving forward as the letter describes. That eliminates the restrictive termination clause language and gives UT greater power to act in the future. It appears to be a 2 step process necessitated by the restrictive termination clause in the original contract.

Now, I understand that UT presented Brucie with a new contract, for 5 years, about 2 weeks ago, but his lawyers have yet to “approve” it. I suspect this new contract has language on termination that Brucie does not like, and his lawyers are advising him not to sign it. Remember Gillispie? I know that you do, LOL. Well, after that Memorandum of Understanding, UK presented Gillispie with a formal contract that his lawyers advised him to not accept. He didn’t accept it. That MOA then simply became the contract between them. Why? Because both parties publicly and privately affirmed it as such, and ACTED as if it was the agreement between them. When it all fell apart, UK was left without the contract language they wanted to fire Gillispie without repercussions, and eventually had to pay him $3 mil for getting rid of him.

That is where UT and Brucie are today. That letter I posted earlier is not their MOA with Brucie. If Brucie refuses to sign a new formal contract, the terms in that letter, offered by UT and ACCEPTED by Brucie by continuing to work under the terms of that letter, becomes the new contract. My reading of that letter tells me that UT is in a much stronger position today relative to their ability to get rid of Brucie now than they were a few weeks ago. In contrast, UK never got into a strong position relative to Gillispie, and paid dearly for Barnhart’s failure to get that job done.

Brucie is now operating on a very short leash. If he pulls on that leash, even with just a little defiance, I would say that Hamilton will cut him off immediately, and I would say that Brucie understands this new reality in the clearest of terms. Don’t expect any more painted bodies at UT Women’s games, any more on screen flirtations with the ESPN babes, any more out of character [UT's preferred, not Brucie's] public statements, or any “minor” infractions from Brucie, at least not until at least 2 things happen. First, the NCAA must complete its investigation and exonerate Brucie [not likely is it] and second, he and UT agree to a new 5 year agreement.

Those who wrote over a month ago about how UT could not fire Brucie due to his contract were only part right. But, they did not know the rest of the story about UT’s terminating that contract or where that would likely lead them all.

Remember last year, little slicky, quickie, rickie saying that he was having the best year of his life? Well, I wonder if Biggie, Baddie Brucie is making a similar claim at this time.

  • LindaS says:

So basically they just terminated the contract, not him and let him stay until he hangs himself again or the NC2A finds him in violation of major infractions and then they will boot him. That may explain why he was nice to Calipari at the SEC conference. It also shows that in my opinion that he truly admires Cal or is so insanely jealous of him he can’t stand it. After what he had done previously at another school how could UT not have some sort of clause in the contract? Oh well, their problem and not ours, you learn from your mistakes. Thanks for the info Professor, you always come through with what we need! GO CATS! FREE ENES, PLEASE! BEAT GEORGIA! NEUTER THAMEL,TAKE HIS PENS, PAPER AND RECORDER AWAY FROM HIM!

I like coming to Larry’s site. It’s educational and comical. Thanks everyone, I needed that, pretty rough going around this part of NC for me lately. Keep up the good work everyone. I enjoy this site. Thanks to you as well Larry.

  • Disappointed says:

I supported Linda, until she said she was just kidding about Thamel. I had thought that someone was going to NYC and give Thamel the Kelso/John Henry treatment. Too bad. I guess I’m just another male taking things too literally.

  • Wildcat Fan says:

I agree with you Disappointed, I was going to start a fund for her defense. I’ll just buy acouple kegs for the next game instead. Havne’t heard the name John Henry for a long time. RIP
