Pitino’s image tarnished forever
By LARRY VAUGHT
This has to be Rick Pitino’s worst nightmare.
He broke the hearts of many University of Kentucky fans when he left the Bluegrass in 1997 to coach the Boston Celtics. He broke even more Big Blue hearts when he came back to Kentucky to coach the Louisville Cardinals.
However, nothing is going to be as damaging to his reputation as the confirmation now that he says he did have consensual sex with Karen Cunagin Sypher in 2003 at a Louisville restaurant where he had been celebrating with friends, including aide Vinny Tatum, a Mercer County native. She alleged she was raped that night.
According to a story in The Courier-Journal, he also told police he gave Sypher $3,000 to have an abortion even though he refuted her allegation that he raped her. Sypher has recently been indicted for trying to extort money from Pitino in his bizarre case that will always haunt Pitino.
No winners
This he said-she said mess has no winners. Pitino had to have known better than to have even consensual sex at a restaurant after it closed.
It’s even worse that Tatum, who was there as Pitino’s designated driver, is now caught in the middle of this incident. The Courier says Tatum, a former manager for Pitino at Kentucky who followed him to Louisville, told the FBI that he didn’t see what happened but heard “only the sounds of two people that seemed to be enjoying themselves during a sexual encounter.”
The story has a lot of twists, turns and allegations that police could not substantiate. Yet Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich issued a statement Tuesday saying that Pitino had been “truthful” about the matter and that Louisville would continue to stand by him and his family.
What can he say?
Pitino wisely did not offer any comments. What could he say that would possibly make the situation any better for him? How could he explain that he actually rode home with her that night and met her later to give her money for the abortion?
This scandal has been waiting to explode. Remember not long ago Pitino sent his son, Richard, to Florida to coach under Billy Donovan even though he apparently had been doing well on the Louisville staff. Obviously Pitino knew this story would eventually come out and he wanted to distance himself from the public outcry.
Think how brutal it will be on the Louisville coach this season when the Cardinals go on the road to play. Fans can be cruel and given this kind of scenario, some fans will be almost unbearable. Who knows what the reception will be in Rupp Arena when he returns for the annual UK-Louisville game this year?
What about recruiting? Sure, we all make mistakes, but there’s no way any parent is going to not know about this and rival recruiters can have a field day with whispers, rumors and innuendoes now directed at Pitino. And what can he say?
Feeling the heat
Pitino has had to be feeling the Big Blue heat from new UK coach John Calipari in recent months. Calipari has the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class. He has embraced the state, including Louisville. Fans, including those in Louisville, have embraced Calipari.
Now Pitino has to deal with a public sex scandal — and likely messy trial for Cypher where even more embarrassing information could be revealed — along with Calipari’s success at Kentucky.
The only good news for Pitino is that hopefully it’s all out in the open now and he can start trying to repair his image even though it’s not going to be easy.
The man who once owned this state has not hit rock bottom, but he certainly is a tarnished star now with no one to blame but himself.

[...] Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger writes that Pitino’s image is tarnished forever. [...]
I have serious doubts about your assertion that Louisville fans have embraced Calipari, actually believing quite the opposite is true. Calipari will inevitably be involved in a mess of quite a different kind.
I didn’t say Louisville fans have embraced Pitino, but that fans in Louisville have meaning the UK fans there and there are a lot of them. Guess time will tell about any possible messes for Cal, but right now Pitino is involved in a huge, huge mess. Would not expect Louisville fans to embrace the UK coach, but there’s no doubt Cal has had a warm, warm reception from many fans, and business folks, in the Derby city.
As these same folks do with whoever is the UK coach, including the individual before Calipari. He is fortunate in that he hasn’t lost a game yet.
Crawl back under your envious UofL rock, Larry said ‘fans in Louisville’, read the article!!!!! You’ll never get over the FACT that there are more UK fns in Louisville than your own cards, please get over it!!
Charlie, go back to 2nd grade where they start teaching reading comprehension. These folks are also fortunate to of not had a coach cheat on his wife and kids. LOL!
I’m a UK fan all the way and my hope is for the UK-UL game we show Pitino some love and don’t act like the other road game fans. He did put us back on the map even though he has hurt us. Man I feel bad for his wife and kids. This is UGLY.
Despite the finger pointing and calls of immorality
that Rick now must endure, he has done nothing many, arguably most, other people have not done. The big difference here is – he got caught. Scream bloody murder at that liberal statement if you must, but history supports the contention that the majority of people simply do not judge a person on fidelity. And then recall the great things Rick has done – like the Daniel Pitino Foundation, like his accepting the request to deliver a Eulogy for his friend Bill Keightly. Rick will suffer, but it won’t be nearly as bad as Larry will have us believe. Rick will carry on. He will do quite well in the city that has both UofL and a higher percentage of UK fans.
The irony here is Rick rode into the state on the SI headline KY SHAME. Now the shame has come full circle. We UK fans dont need to VILLEify Rick, we need to earnestly pray for him. All of us can fall in the quickest of fashions. Unfortunately, Rick always tried to keep Shepard and Cameron from witnessing for God, now Rick really needs God. I hope that is the answer he seeks.
I was hoping someone would bring up the phony UK fans outnumber U of L fans argument.
* Fans of Louisville Cardinals basketball outnumbered Kentucky Wildcat fans by 53.7% to 33.3% in the Louisville area.
* Fans of Louisville football weighed in at 61.3%, as compared to 20.8% for Kentucky football.
That’s according to a Courier-Journal poll in which Eric Crawford was involved.

All I can say is hahahaha…. seriously, Pitino finally got what was coming to him. Amidst all the slick talk and smooth moves, in the end his past decisions were indicative of this man’s true character. Would Dean Smith coach at Duke? This is unforgiveable for a man who could have had his choice of college mens basketball coaching jobs. The way I see it the world now sees this man clearly….
“Arguably most” people do not cheat on their spouse then fork over 3 grand to terminate the growing offsping. Lots of people make mistakes, and many otherwise “good” people have committed adultery. But if you don’t judge someone by how he or she honors his or her marital vows, you are a fool. If you know someone steals, lies or cheats in any part of his or her life, you take that into account when judging him or her, and you should. Pitino lied and cheated on at least one occassion. For his sake, I hope it was the only time, but I sadly have reason to doubt this was a one time “mistake.”
I respect what Coach Pitino did for UK, as well as what he is doing for U of L now. Everyone from Lexington has known Rick has been a “ladies man,” for well over a decade. This isn’t a surprise. We all assumed what happened months ago. . .
Seriously?!
All Kentucky Fans know what Karma means “well most” but now Little Ricky is finding out! Can’t wait till he comes back to Rupp!
Some really good comments and discussion here. Obviously, this is a hot-button topic with a lot of diverse views. Rick was always great to me, so I really hate to see this happen to him and his family. I also hate that my buddy, Vinny Tatum, has been involved. Just wonder what more might come out if this goes to tria.
