Brooks wants Cobb to be creative
By LARRY VAUGHT
Rich Brooks has had some experience trying to be creative with a player like he plans to do this year when Randall Cobb will play receiver, quarterback and kick returner.
“I think we tried to do some of that with Shane Boyd but it did not end up being as effective as we thought it might be. We ended up going back to a more conventional offense when we were running,” Brooks said. “I am just hopeful that the change of pace with him (at quarterback) will bring a shot in the arm to an offense that needs a shot in the arm from last year.”
Cobb spent some time at quarterback last year, but he’s so elusive that he could easily be UK’s best receiver and that’s where Brooks hopes to use him most of the time. However, the coach also senses Cobb could create special problems for defenses if he suddenly lines up at quarterback.
“You have to respect his ability not only to run, but also to throw. That will be the different thing about him,” Brooks said. “I know people will be concerned about his running ability, but he throws better than (former Arkansas star Darren) McFadden. He is not as fast or as big as McFadden, but those are the types of things we hope to be able to utilize when we put the ball in hands and let him be creative.”
