Kentucky shows why it should be No. 1
By LARRY VAUGHT
LEXINGTON — All Kentucky had to do to climb to No. 1 in the national rankings was beat Arkansas.
Current No. 1 Texas lost at Kansas State and it was a given that a UK win would put the Wildcats back on top — something that seemed impossible last March.
However, Kentucky didn’t want to back into the top spot with a so-so performance even after Texas lost again Saturday to Connecticut. Instead, the Cats played perhaps their best half of the season and went on to crush Arkansas 101-70 here Saturday in a game that was never really a game.
Arkansas looked as disorganized and discouraged as the Cats did near the end of last season when it was obvious coach Billy Gillispie had lost the team.
Kentucky looked like a team with the swagger, confidence and ability to win a national championship in coach John Calipari’s first season as it dominated every phase of the game.
How good was Kentucky? Well, the Cats limited Arkansas to 30.6 percent shooting, won the rebounding battle 59-39, blocked nine shots, got a career-high 18 points from Darius Miller and once led by 46 points early in the second half.
The Cats were so good that even Calipari — who had made the Cats practice like they were on a two-game losing streak because he didn’t like the way UK won at Florida or Auburn — could not complain.
“It was as good a 20 minutes as we have played (in the first half),” Calipari said. “Arkansas is a good team. They hit a buzz saw. We would have done this to 360 teams today. They just hit us on a bad day.”
Arkansas coach John Pelphrey didn’t want to argue after watching his team get dismantled in the same arena where his retired jersey hangs.
“We didn’t do a whole lot to slow them up,” Pelphrey said. “They are very good. Their size and speed separate them. Quality frontcourt and depth makes them unique in college basketball. They are really good. They have a chance to be the best in college basketball this year.
“This is by far the best anybody has played against us and by far the best physical talent we have played. They are very good.”
Which is what No. 1 team in the nation should be.
“I sure hope we looked that way,” UK freshman Daniel Orton, who had six points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in 13 minutes, said. “We all played incredibly and all clicked. We did our best effort today. That is the Kentucky we are.”
If it is, another championship banner could be on the way.
Freshman DeMarcus Cousins had 16 points and 14 rebounds despite having the caps on his two front teeth knocked out early in the game. Freshman John Wall had 16 points and seven assists. Junior Patrick Patterson had nine points and seven rebounds. Freshman Eric Bledsoe had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
“They wanted it bad. That is why they played this way. I think it was a pride thing,” Calipari said of the impending No. 1 ranking. “I try to tell them those seven national titles are not a burden. They’re a badge of honor. Number one in the country is not a burden. It’s a badge of honor, and so for us we’ll see how we respond now.
“The issue that I’ve had in the past where my teams have started off on win streaks like this and become number one in the country is they were all veteran teams. They had been there. They had been to Elite Eights the year before. This team was an NIT team. I’m playing with a bunch of children, but they’re very good children. But they’re young and all of this is new. That’s why I’m trying to raise the bar and drag them along. We have a good team. ”
A good team? Kentucky is 19-0 and just handed Arkansas its most lopsided Southeastern Conference loss ever. Calipari was downright giddy over the play of reserves Orton and DeAndre Liggins and if Miller plays like this, UK already has the most talented starting team in college basketball.
“I don’t mind they want to be the best. What is wrong with that?” the UK coach said.
Nothing at all.
“We do feel a little bit like No. 1 now, but we know it’s a long season,” Bledsoe said. “But I won’t lie. We wanted to be No. 1. That’s why we really poured it on today. There was no letting up like we had in some games.”
Calipari knows the critics won’t go away. He remembers when his Memphis teams were ranked No. 1 and the knock was the Tigers couldn’t win a national title because of poor free throw shooting. He knows skeptics now will question UK’s schedule strength.
“We’re not playing to be No. 1. We are playing for a one seed (in the NCAA Tournament),” Calipari said.
Then he welcomed the skeptics to take their best shots.
“It kind of inspires us. In this information age, I don’t have to say it. My guys see everything,” Calipari said.
Just like Arkansas got to see just how good Kentucky can be when it is playing at its best.

They definitley played like the NO. 1 team in the country today. Now all they have to do is keep playing the same way to keep that ranking, and prove they are the best team in the country. Everybody always wants to beat Kentucky but when they are No.1 the target is even bigger. Great game by everyone. Was really hoping Krebs would score. It’s a great day to be a WILDCAT fan. GO BIG BLUE!!!
Great article. I’ve been wanting to see what the team looks like when it plays inspired basketball for 40 minutes. It wasn’t 40 minutes today, but it was a lot closer than it has been. Cal described it perfectly when he said it was a buzzsaw. From the defensive stops to the offensive execution–wow! I said it in an earlier post, but if Darius can play inspired basketball like he did today, the sky’s the limit. And Orton’s blocks, Liggins diving on the floor. You gotta love it.
They were AWESOME
This was so much fun today. We all knew the team had the POTENTIAL to do this…but actually seeing it in action is amazing. And they STILL have room to improve. Wow!
Like Wayne, I would have liked to see Krebs score as well. It would have been nice to have all 13 guys in the scoring column. What an amazing performance. This was truly the greatest way to ascend to #1. How incredible is it to be so dominant that you get bored with 15 minutes left, coast to the end and still win by 31? An unbelievable performance by the best team in the country!!
Like Karen, I have also been waiting to see the REAL team show up for a whole game. It turns out that we probably will NEVER see them for the full 40 minutes because there will NEVER be a need for it. There is NO TEAM IN THE COUNTRY that can withstand this team, playing at their peak, for anywhere near 40 minutes!! All I can say is: WOW!!!!!!!!
MONDAY CAN’T GET HERE FAST ENOUGH!!! #1 !!!!!!
GO BIG BLUE!!!!
It is so wonderful to be a Kentucky fan right now. Always have been and always will be, but today, I had warm feelings all over. First time in a long time I felt so good about a game and a season. All the guys did such a tremendous job, John missed a few shots he should have had, ESPN will have to use Cuz this time! Cal’s children played like men on a mission! I just cannot imagine what it must be like to sit on the bench coaching such a talented team.
Wayne, I told everyone at work this week Kentucky has an X on their back just because they are Kentucky and everyone wants a piece of them but if they got to the #1 ranking that X was going to be 3 times bigger.
I got back from shopping a little while ago. Have you noticed how many more people are wearing Kentucky shirts, hats and jackets lately? Closet fans, were in the closet last year and now they are showing their true selves! It was fun walking down the isle and coming towards you was another fan, and before you knew it, without saying a word, the hand went up with the index finger extended and a big smile on the face! It is so good to be a Kentucky Wildcat fan, eat your hearts out you other teams!
Nice article Larry. Great fun and great team win today!
Thanks for football recruiting update too!!!
It is great to be a Wildcat today.

Outstanding job Larry! I couldn`t have said it better.
I knew this team could be playing at another level. Today proved it. They have had a tendency to get big leads then start to coast and let the other team back in the game. They didn’t start to coast until they were up by 46 today and that had more to do with the subs playing than it did the starters letting up. This was their best effort of the season and I hope they remember how good it feels to win BIG! If they play this way all the time they might just run the table. Go Big Blue!
Agree with all. And Monday is going to be the day I know I was not sure would ever get here again. I have noticed all the UK blue out and about and after Monday we may see even more
Kentucky Basketball is fun again!

It is great fun again and a year ago I wasn’t sure that would ever happen again
LOL!!!! I have noticed the same thing Larry..At my weekly Poker tournament I always have something Blue on even last year I will always fly BIG BLUE!! But Now 25% of the players are flying them now..I used to complain about bandwagon Fans..But I have grown to realize that aslong as they have BIG BLUE in their heart then It was OK lol!!! But even at that I remember seeing Marketing #’s when I was at school in Lexington Back In 88 to 92..UK has been at the Top of all Marketing and memorabilia most years and they have always been in the TOP 5 since the mid 50’s…Thats including pro teams..the COWBOYS, STEELERS, LAKERS,CELTICS and the REDWINGS of the world..So I don’t expect a drop off In that trend this year…GO CATS!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!
Did I understand correctly that if 3 freshman leave for the NBA Kentucky is sans scholorships for the 3 players for 3 years?
