Calipari knows real tests are coming
By LARRY VAUGHT
LOUISVILLE — Kentucky coach John Calipari didn’t think his team made enough turnovers.
Do what?
“No sir, I have never had a coach tell me that. I asked him, ‘Do you want me to go back to having five turnovers every game?’” said Kentucky freshman John Wall.
The Wildcats had only eight turnovers in a ho-hum 94-57 victory over vastly outmanned UNC Asheville here Monday night that Calipari knows was the final dress rehearsal for UK’s first major tests.
The Cats will host defending national champion North Carolina Saturday and then play Connecticut in New York and at Indiana next week.
“I didn’t like effort in the first part of the game but I liked how guys played after halftime. I thought they really tried,” said Calipari.
They might have, but they better try a lot harder to beat a bigger, more talented North Carolina. Remember, UNC Asheville lost 124-49 at Tennessee after falling behind 50-8 and lost 79-58 at Georgia.
“We had eight turnovers, which isn’t enough. If you only have eight turnovers, you are not being aggressive. They laughed when I said we didn’t have enough turnovers. But when you only have eight, you are not playing aggressively,” Calipari said.
Wall certainly did play aggressively, though. The talented freshman had 12 points and 14 assists, one shy of the school record. He also got six steals and four rebounds.
Several of Wall’s assists came on fast breaks after steals when he could easily have scored. Instead, he lobbed passes to Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins for crowd-pleasing dunks.
“If the big guys are out running the court, you want to get them the ball,” Wall said. “I would rather do that than score.”
Calipari admits Wall is ahead of any freshman guard he’s had — and he has two former Memphis point guards playing in the NBA that were high draft picks.
“He is trying to listen to what I say,” Calipari said.
The Kentucky coach says his daily report from UK’s strength coach refers to Wall as an “animal” and notes how he tries to get better daily. Tutors tell Calipari how hard Wall is working academically in an attempt to get an A in every class — something no one could have anticipated since he is already projected as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA draft.
“Certain kids have that drive to stand out and be the best,” Calipari said. “One thing different about him is he is a pleaser. He will try to please teammates and coaches. If I do not tell him he is doing good, he will ask if he’s doing okay.”
From what UNC-Asheville coach Eddie Beidenbach saw, he thought Kentucky did better than okay in this game.
“Kentucky gained a lot in this game,” Beidenbach said. “They gained confidence and they didn’t turn the ball over much. Our pressure wasn’t all that bad, and Kentucky played better than they had in previous games. They played smarter than they had been playing.”
Maybe, but Calipari was not convinced.
“This next 10 days we will find out exactly where we are. It is not bad if we lose all three (games) as long as we learn where we are and what we need to work on,” Calipari said.
Calipari said his team had been in “six wars” before Monday’s breather that he hoped built “a little bit of confidence” even though he was not pleased with the defense.
But he knows after two days of practice and a short workout Friday, his team has to get ready to be tested like it has not been yet.
“We have two practice days and a Friday to get ready for a top 10 team and then follow with another top 10 team that is mad as heck cause they lost and then we play at Assembly Hall where they win. That is a big game where they are bringing it. We have our work cut out for us,” Calipari said. “You want to keep learning about your team and how we are going to play.
“We have one month and some change to get ready for league games. I have not panicked yet. I have one foot and my hands on the panic button, but we have time.”
Or at least he hopes so depending on what happens the next three games.

Not enough turnovers because they weren’t aggressive enough? I know coaches need to make up problems to have something to work on, but that is REALLY stretching it. I don’t know how much more aggressive they could have been. The offense was firing on ALL cylinders. There were so many slams and so many assists, it made your head spin. The fact they had so many turnovers had nothing to do with not being aggressive and everything to do with how well they were passing and executing. GIVE IT UP CAL!!! And the defense was just as solid with both pressure and denying the offensive rebounds. The ONLY thing Cal can possibly hang his “negative” hat on is the several minute stretch where the score went from 80 – 36 to 80 – 46. There was some lackluster play in that stretch, but that is it.
All of that being said, this was against an infinitely inferior team, but that is what they are SUPPOSED to do against a team like this. Come Saturday, the University of the Little Blind Sisters of the Poor won’t be in the house. It will be the big boys and there won’t be a dozen ally-oops against THEM. Let’s hope that the confidence and execution, that was shown tonight, is built upon and shows up against Crapolina and Puke-on. If Cal can keep this moving forward, with tonight as a base, I like our chances in both those games. Another great win tonight. GO BIG BLUE!!!
If Wall is having to ask the coach if he’s doing alright these days, that young man needs some help on a couch. If he doesn’t know, he may be the only fan of the game in the country who doesn’t.
Wall is truly a pleaser, which is really a nice thing to see in a star. Kind of like Patterson
The season starts Saturday. Then we find out what kind of ball team we have.

We passed the EASY classes. The Advanced programs start Sat. Cant wait to see these guys play NC. Win or lose tonight NC will come in with a chip on their shoulders. If I was their coach(or the coach of any team ranked below us) I would have 1 moniker. “Who do they think they are”. I would say no NIT team should be ranked that high. This will be our first game against a team that will be playing not to prove they belong, but to try to prove we don’t! That is a totally different feeling.
NC, UCONN, UL and the entire SEC are going to play us like we stole something from them. The next 2 games will give these young men a taste of what thats like and I for one am glad for it. We get to see how much work we still need to do and it will help prepare the freshman for Jan. 2. I think that there is no amount of talking that can prepare a Freshman for the intensity of the UK vs UL game. To a man all first year players in that game say that are amazed by the level of play required for a win.
Can’t wait to watch them grow. A win would be good but growth toward something special at years end would be GREAT. SORRY FOR THE LENGTH. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OROSTAY HOME.
Win or lose it’s great to see we have a chance to win the next three games since that has not been the case recently. This team has a swagger of confidence now. It will be hard to beat this team, no matter who is playing them. GO CATS!
FUN FUN FUN….it’s just gonna be fun this year. Will have some loses, unexpected loses and will have some tremendous wins, but it is gonna be fun and wish I could bottle Wall’s smile, Patrick’s attitude and Cousin’s determination and the whole teams karma.
One more thing, make sure your seat belt is buckled tight Saturday don’t want anyone falling out of their chair and hurting themselves! Bring it on, GO CATS!
It is a plus to pass the “easy classes”. Just remember how many we have flunked over the past few years, Gardner Webb, VMI, Georgia, to name a few. I’m glad we are beating the teams we are supposed to beat. The next couple of games will definitely show us where we stand.
LARRY: You are so right, WALL is not a run of the mill STAR, he does seem to want to please..I think the one player that can either help us in a huge way or hurt us even more is ERIC BLEDSOE…In the last 2 games he has really played undercontrol…He is like #12 in the country in TO, He has to continue to not hurt his team..But I LOVE his stroke on those 3’s..You feel like every time he shoots it is going, But if he plays the way he has the last 2..More of a true 2man..The CATS will keep those TO down and be vary hard to Beat…..GO BIG BLUE!!!
