Newton blames himself for UK’s loss
By LARRY VAUGHT
Morgan Newton didn’t mince words about his feelings.
“You feel like you let a lot of people down. You let the senior class down. There was a great turnout of UK fans, and you feel like you let them down. It’s just tough to lose like that,” said the Kentucky freshman quarterback after Saturday’s 30-24 overtime loss to Tennessee.
“There are a lot of guys down, especially the senior. I can tell you every senior fought to build this program. They affected me as a person and made me better, but I let them down.”
Newton was 10-for-22 passing for only 69 yards in the loss to Tennessee that cost UK a chance to finish second in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division to one of six SEC teams with 7-5 records vying for bowl berths.
He also lost a fumble and was stopped on a third-down run in the final minute that forced UK to settle for a field goal to tie the game rather than a touchdown that would have ended a 24-game losing streak to the Vols.
“They had a great defense, but I think tonight I played like a freshman and hurt my team,” Newton said. “I made key mistakes. I fumbled. I overthrew receivers.
“I cannot blame anybody but myself for the mistakes I made out there. I did not understand what the players were talking about when it came to this game. I didn’t get what playing Tennessee was like until the game started.”
Newton part of being a team’s quarterback is accepting responsibility for losses like this one and the 31-24 loss to Mississippi State when the Cats couldn’t score late to tie the game.
“I have to look at myself first. There were a lot of things I could have done to won this game,” he said. “That rollout (on third down), I’ve got to get the first down or get in the end zone.
“Anytime yo lose at home, or lose period, it is tough. There is no doubt this game was different from any other game we played al year because of what it means to players and fans. You hear about it all week. The Cat Walk (before the game) was great. This is a special game and I just didn’t play very well and make enough plays to help my team win.”
Newton was so shaken after the game that he said he couldn’t “look at the seniors” or remember what defensive tackle Corey Peters said to him as they walked off the field together.
“This is tough on me. I am supposed to be the team leader and I let them down,” Newton said. “We were not able to seize a huge opportunity in front of us and it was my fault.”
He said not to blame running back Derrick Locke for not sustaining his block long enough on the crucial third down run even though Joker Phillips, UK’s head coach of the offense, said Locke didn’t execute the block as he should have.
“In hindsight, I would love to have that play over to see what more I could have done,” Newton said. “The coaches made the call and had faith in me to get the job done. That’s my fault for not doing it.”
Phillips said he admired Cobb for being so hard on himself, but didn’t want him to feel like it was his fault UK lost.
“I like the fact he is hard on himself, but I don’t want him to beat himself up,” Phillips said. “Our kids all played hard. He’s 18 and playing in his sixth college game. He gave his all. He’s done all we have asked of him. He’s matured and improved. He’s going to be fine.”
Randall Cobb, UK’s most versatile playmaker, consoled Newton after the Mississippi State loss. He planned to do the same thing again, especially since he also lost a fumble and couldn’t get the ball in the end zone when he had chances on the final drive in regulation.
“Morgan has to refocus and get ready to play in a bowl game now. It was a bad loss for all of us, but he has to move on and not look back,” Cobb said.
For Newton, that’s not easy to do.
“I did not come here to place blame on anybody else,” Newton said. “I look at myself and know there are a lot of things I could have done to win this game. That’s why there’s no way for me not to blame myself for the loss.”

Head Up Young Man!!!! You can’t blame yourself for this game…Your leadership is what got us to this point in the last 4-5 games…Head up and just work to get better, Get ready to Lead BIG BLUE In another Bowl Victory!!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
Morgan, don’t even think about hanging this loss solely on yourself. I applaud you taking responsibility for your mistakes but that was a hell of a defense you were up against and you have three more chances to make it up against them. Keep working hard, keep your head up and you will start making plays even you don’t realize you are capable of making. You definately have the talent and you have the right guys teaching you. If you listen to coach Sanders you will be mentioned in that same breath of great QB’s hes created. Thank you for a terrific effort this season and you still have one game to go to end on a high note.
Good stuff. Hopefully more folks will see and respond so we can make sure Morgan gets to see this. He was really, really hard on himself, which is what the great ones usually do
You win as a team, you lose as a team.
Remember, Newt, it is a TEAM game. If the UK defense was less like swiss cheese, you wouldn’t have needed to make as many plays to score more points. Everyone SHARES responsibility.
To learn how much it hurts, makes me know that you will do everything you can next time.
You are a Wildcat. You are OUR guy !
Good stuff Jason and CoachCal. I totally agree
Fault lies with not having a seasoned upper class QB in the backup role. To have to play a 1st year freshman means a recruiting miss or mistake occurred in the last 3 years. Our seniors deserved better than to work with a talented guy 6 months from HS graduation. You cannot survive long in the SEC doing that.
Amen to that Mick
Your leadership qualities and cool demeanor has helped us get to a bowl game. Stay positive and continue to work hard. Very few quarterbacks across the country are asked to run their team as a true freshman. You have done an admirable job. Again, work hard and send the seniors off with ANOTHER bowl win.
Totally agree with that Jeff. Morgan Newton has handled himself exceptionally well this year and done much for this team. He is largely responsible for where we find ourselves today — prepraing for our 4th straight bowl game. I’m more frustrated that I think he has been asked to do a few things this year that he probably shouldn’t have been asked to do. I know Morgan would not likely agree with that which is no surprise because he since he is a first class competitor who likely believes that he can do anything. But again, I think he as been put in very difficult situations on a few occasions and asked to do too much, too soon. And please note, I’m not trying to bash any coaches here. It’s just kind of like a family. We get to pick on each other a litle bit if we want, but it’s not because we don’t fundamentally believe in one another. We do, and we believe in you Morgan. Now let’s go get ready for another ball game. Go Big Blue!
[...] Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger writes that Morgan Newton blames himself for loss: “He also lost a fumble and was stopped on a third-down run in the final minute that forced UK to settle for a field goal to tie the game rather than a touchdown that would have ended a 24-game losing streak to the Vols.” [...]
Great post Jeff and Paul you are fair to feel that way. You are also right that Morgan would disagree because competitors have to believe they can produce — that is what makes them special
Morgan regardless of class u are the leader on this team when you are in the huddle. The only thing u should take from this game is the feeling you felt when the game was over. If you remember that feeling going forward for the next 3 plus years I have no doubt that every film session, every practice, every check down and every touchdown will be approached with a feeling of “Did I do enough?”. You have to take this feeling and throw it away because you know you never want to feel that again and you might lose but it won’t be because you felt you didn’t do enough.
Morgan, Keep the fire and the competitor attitude. Some of the blog posts I’ve seen says Tenn was weaker this year. I disagree. I think they had the 3rd best defense in the SEC. You have faced possibly the 3 best defenses in the nation and performed well. The future looks bright for you and UK. Now go win the bowl game and treat it as the start of next season!
Couldn’t agree more with both of you Dandycat and Barry. I like that he is hard on himself, but you also have to like the future with him at quarterback
Morgan did things this year that most true freshmen cannot do in the SEC. Also I think his words will inspire his teammates and help him gain respect in the locker room. Take notice this QB blames himself and not his teammates. You know where I’m going with that one Larry. This kid is our future and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him earn the starting role next year. The CATS have nothing to hang their heads about, we had some monumental wins this year and I hope we go into our bowl game and finish on a positive note. Lastly, thanks Morgan for showing you are a class act and just remember when in doubt look for R. Cobb on the field. He is the man!
I do not think we have seen Morgan’s best work yet. He is getting use to college, college football, SEC football. 90% of the time he looks like an upper classman behind center. And as we all hard Coach Sanders say he has not made the same misstake twice. Look for Morgan to rebound in a big way. Is comments sound like the Tebow speech in a way. Let’s see if he can motivate his team in the same way as a freshman!!
Again, more really good stuff here. I hope to make sure Morgan gets to see it
Morgan , It’s great that you are willing to take some personal responsibility but you know football is a team sport. I’m not sure anyone in blue played mistake-free football Saturday night. The coaches weren’t perfect either, for that matter. Continue to learn from every experience. I’m proud of the way you handled your freshman year. You helped UK win 3 straight road games in the SEC. No small accomplishment. I look forward to seeing you develop and lead this team for the next 3 years!
Heck Morgan, if you make the same improvement through this bowl
prep time and beyond that you made this season, we are all in for a
very exciting ride! Keep your head up and your eyes downfield………
Go Big Blue!
