Fidler giving up final year of eligibility

By LARRY VAUGHT

Normally a Senior Day release doesn’t contain surprising information. It will include a time schedule for the Senior Day festivities and a quote or two from the coach about how much he will miss the players.

However, UK’s Senior Day release had one big surprise — quarterback Will Fidler is giving up his final year of eligibility.

Remember just a few weeks ago UK coach Rich Brooks was debating whether to play Fidler or true freshman Morgan Newton after starting quarterback Mike Hartline was injured at South Carolina. Newton got the start at Auburn, but Fidler came in and played well. Since then, though, Newton has been the main guy and now apparently Fidler has decided there’s no need for him to come back next year with Hartline and Newton both returning along with highly-touted freshman redshirt Ryan Mossakowski.

Fidler probably is making the best decision for himself. But it has to be hard. He came to UK, did nothing wrong, earned his teammates respect and got better. However, he never got a real chance to play and walking away from a game he loves has to hurt.

It will open a scholarship for Kentucky, but that’s not why fans should give him an extraordinary ovation. Do it because he’s an in-state kid that bled blue, helped Newton all he could after Hartline was hurt and truly loves the Cats.

It’s also a really nice touch — and another classy move by UK coach Rich Boroks — that Kentucky will honor the memory of linebacker Chris Mosby, who would have been a senior this season.  He had committed to play for Kentucky in 2005, but passed away in an accident before arriving at UK.

This is the complete list of players who will be honored at UK’s Senior Day according to information provided by Kentucky today:
