Who is Bo Derek? Cats don’t know
By LARRY VAUGHT
After the Wildcats beat Georgia, Kentucky coach Rich Brooks noted that while it may not have been a pretty win to others, it was beautiful to him and referred to movie star Bo Derek and her 1979 role in “10” about a trouble middle-aged songwriter who became so obsessed with Derek — a perfect “10” — that he followed her on her honeymoon.
“We are not getting style points here. We are trying to win games. It is not always pretty, but it looked like Bo Derek running down the beach to me. If that was not a 10, I have never seen a 10,” Brooks said.
He admitted that probably none of us his players even knew who Derek was even though his assistant coaches and media members — and many Wildcats fans — immediately did.
I thought it might be fun to see if the players on Monday even had an idea who Brooks was referring to and what they knew about Derek, who was a heartthrob among most males when that movie cam out.
“Bo Derek? I have no idea who he is,” UK offensive guard Stuart Hines said. “I don’t know anything about him.”
“I don’t know who it is. I will have to ask coach Brooks about that. I assume he was some former player,” safety Calvin Harrison said.
Offensive guard Christian Johnson thought for several minutes before answering.
“I’ve heard the name, but I really don’t know where,” Johnson said. “Should I know it.”
When I explained to Johnson who she was, he just laughed. “Now I know why he said that,” Johnson said.
So do we.
LOL!!LOL!!LOL!!LOL!!! oh to be young again….GO BIG BLUE!!!
I have to admit, I didn’t know who it was either! haha I had heard the name before, but was unsure who it was. You just have to love Brooks and his “witty” comments!
Larry, this is the funniest article you have ever written. “I have no idea who HE is”, “I don’t know anything about HIM”, “I assume HE was some former player”, just priceless. It makes you feel old to hear things like that. It’s like my kids, who listen to all the current remakes of old songs. When they hear the original versions they say “Hey, Elvis or the Beatles or whoever, stole that song from so and so”. No children, it’s the other way around.
MATT: BO DAREK was one of the first Pamela Anderson..But with some CLASS!!!!oooops did I say that..LOL..Anyhow, Brooks is classic….I had a chance to watch his Atlanta SUPER BOWL run has the D cord. Last week..Probabley his best moment in his pro coaching stints…But he did what he has done here at oragon..He just doesn’t get the respect he deserves NATIONALY..IMO!!!GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
Matt, you are killing me. But trust me, once you see her, you will remember her — or at least the way she looked when she made that movie.
Thanks Jim. It was fun watching the players react
MATT: you owe It to your self to Rent the movie “10″..LOL…You will be thanking LARRY!!LOL..MAN I wish we could keep Coach around 10 more years…GO BIG BLUE!!!
LARRY, any update on COBB,Mathews, LOCKE and anyone else for that matter?..GO CATS GO!!!!
Guys, that movie was made before I was born! haha (not to make any of you feel old or anything). I’m 25, but I’ll have to look for that movie to see what the fuss is about now! Will it only be available on the old reel tapes or can I find it on DVD? haha Only kidding fellas!
LOL!!!thats ok young man I used to have your thoughts on the “OLDER FOLK”..LOL..They say I”M just at the top of the hill..Now I am headed down the wrong side..LOL….GO BIG BLUE!!!
haha…I’m a firm believer in that you’re only as old as you think you are. I own a business in Owensboro and have a customer that comes in on a regular basis. He’s probably in his 70’s. I always ask how he is and his response is always the same, “Great!”. He still runs every day and plays golf often. Just stays active because he still believes he is a young man. I like being around people like that, who genuinely enjoy their life, so much more enjoyable!
TRUBLU69 & Larry -
I’m out for the evening I guess. Laptop is about to die, so I don’t guess I have much of a choice! haha You guys hold the fort down and I’ll see you again tomorrow.
No real change on injuries. All expected to practice by WEdnesday.
And Matt, have enjoyed all your posts on this subject. Let us know when you get to see the movie
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! PRICELESS!!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR GO HOME
Love it, Larry. Made me laugh early this morning. You are awesome! Keep up the great work.
Bo Derek was in “Tommy Boy” in the last 10-15 years just to skew a little younger. I am 30 and know her.
[...] Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger writes that the Cats don’t know Bo: “I thought it might be fun to see if the players on Monday had any idea who Brooks was referring to and what they knew about Derek, who was a heartthrob among most males when the movie came out.” [...]
Ah yes, Mary Cathleen Collins I Believe.
Remember her well .
Derek was her husband’s (at the time) name which she assumed when she married John Derek.
Can anyone name the other, two big names who co-starred in the movie “10″?
Mary Cathleen is still very active in wounded veteran affairs.
Good question Gene. I will have to put on my thinking hat. I just remember Bo
Gene..There was someone else in the movie? I never noticed.
Great point Brad
Gotcha Brad.
Know exactly where you’re coming from, even at my age
Larry, a clue —- one was Julie Andrews.
Maybe Dudley Moore now that I think about it
Wow – Do I remember Bo Derek! – Dudley Moore made all us short guys dream “sweet dreams”! I am not as old as Coach Brooks but I have a good memory like him! Keep up the great stories, Larry!
Larry—You sir are correct !!
Us old guys (in the words of coach Hall) “still got it”!!
Yes we do Gene — at least every now and then
My buddy Chris Brown (Barnstable-Brown) got to dance with Bo Derek at their Derby party one year when we were in grade school. That sonofa..
SO!!! I danced with that poster every night for 2 years LOL!!!ooops have I said to much?….Great Story Larry, Thanks…GO BIG BLUE!!!
had the same reaction when Farrah Fawcett passed away earlier this year… She and I are the same age (was)… I’m still alive. You know how I know? I still have images of Derek and Fawcett in my mind.
Know what you mean about Bo and Farrah. they were two sweethearts to my age group. I once had posters of both — and Racquel Welch
Hey Larry, (t.i.c.) wasn’t Bo Derek the truck driver friend of Burt Reynolds in Smokey & the Bandit???BTW, other actors in “10″ Dudley Moore & Julie Andrews.
I don’t remember RefMike. YOu could well be right
