Wall already Mr. Clutch for Wildcats
By LARRY VAUGHT
LEXINGTON — As soon as Patrick Patterson saw the shot, he knew it was in.
“I knew he was going to make it. The ball was going in all the way,” said Patterson. “I had a perfect view and as soon as he let it go, I knew the game was over.”
He was right as Wall’s collegiate debut ended with him making the game-winning shot jump shot with 0.5 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats a 72-70 win over Miami.
“That is John. Mr. Clutch all the way. I went after the rebound any way, but I pretty much knew the shot was going in,” Kentucky freshman DeMarcus Cousins said.
It was only fitting that the game ended this way because it was Miami’s hot shooting — 15-for-26 from 3-point range — that gave the RedHawks a chance to pull a monumental upset that veteran coach Charlie Coles admitted would have been the biggest in his coaching career.
Instead, the win proved why the John Calipari era is going to be far different than the Billy Gillispie time.
When Miami went ahead by 18 points in the first half, Calipari said he was “ecstatic” because he wanted his young team to be tested.
“I wanted to see what we were made of. Then this team (Miami) wouldn’t go away and my team in the huddle said we were not losing,” Calipari said. “We needed this. It was kind of fun. When you are not in a life and death situation and trying to get your team better, it was fun.”
When did Gillispie ever have fun or let his team have fun? He didn’t.
That’s why Calipari’s team didn’t fold when a big underdog was making shot after shot and the Cats — by Calipari’s own admission — were discombobulated on both ends of the court at times.
Wall showed why he could be special. He struggled early with turnovers and defensive lapses. He found himself on the bench with Calipari being told to calm down by the coach and junior Patrick Patterson. And he listened.
“Pat’s leadership really helped me,” Wall said. “Then everybody stepped up and made plays. But when Coach did put me back in, I was ready. I made the plays I should have been making.
“I learned a big lesson tonight. You can’t try to do too much or do everything by yourself. I am a competitor and don’t want to lose, but I realized if I am not scoring, I have to get the ball inside and play better defense. I have never seen a team shoot like that and I let it bother me. I learned that didn’t help.”
Wall, who had to sit out UK’s season-opening win over Morehead, had 19 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field and 10-for-14 shooting at the foul line. He had five assists, three steals and two rebounds in 38 minutes to offset his five turnovers.
Calipari never considered calling timeout after Miami’s Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with :08 left. Instead, Wall got the ball and went to work.
“When I hit the shot, I flew back. I saw him running to the ball. Everybody was pretty much back, but he is fast and good. It was contested, but he just hit a big-time shot,” Hayes, who had 16 points said.
That’s what big-time players do. It’s why Wall when and got the ball late in the game and drew a foul when Calipari had called a timeout to set up getting the ball to Eric Bledsoe. Wall had been battling leg cramps, but he wanted to take the free throws. He missed one of two shots, but winners want the ball with a game on the line.
“This is not high school,” Wall said. “They would not let us penetrate. It was great to have a tough game like this and it showed us we are nowhere near where we need to be. But we won.”
Don’t forget that because the last two seasons, Kentucky lost this kind of game to Gardner-Webb and VMI.
So while this was not an overpowering performance for the Cats, they did get a superb second-half performance from Cousins (10 points, 10 rebounds), clutch play from Darius Miller and the standard from Patterson (17 points, 10 rebounds).
“We were down 18 at home where we’re supposed to win every game by 37 and we didn’t fold,” Calipari said. “I am proud of them.
“There is no reason to be upset with any of these kids. This falls back on me. We have got to have better shot selection. We were out of control. We have got to get the ball inside, but our big guys have to catch the ball and make lay-ups.
“But I am happy we won and to be tested like this is good for a team.”
Especially when there is a player like Wall around at the end to make sure the Cats won a game they probably would not have the last two years.

WOW!!!! Wasn’t expecting this kind of game until December. I guess Cal wasn’t just blowing smoke this time, in his pre-gameday statements. What a great comeback. Lots of problems defending the 3 though. They really need to get out on the shooter with their arms up, instead of leaving them open or running at them with their arms down. Lots of guts shown by this young UK squad. Luckily our outside shooting was decent, because Miami really packed the lane and were stripping the ball on a pretty regular basis whenever we drove or passed the ball inside. Good offensive rebounding made the difference in the second half. The early part of this season will be like a tournament: Survive and advance. GO BIG BLUE!!!
As the 3’s continued to fall for Miami, I had to ask myself if the curse of ordinary opposing players coming into Rupp and shooting the ball like NBA lottery picks will ever end? Probably not because we are the “biggest game” on everyone’s schedule, and especially those teams who are supposed to have no chance to win have little to lose in launching up 3’s, and when they get hot, it is on.
Of course, we helped them stay in the game with some lackluster defense at times, poor free-throw shooting, poor shot selection, and turnovers. But really, this is where Cal said the team would be, and this is where they should be given the fact that we have a new coach, new players, new sytem etc. Hopefully the team will grow from this experience and I really think that Cal will make sure they do.
I’ll tell you what though — having experienced some gut-wrenching losses to teams like Miami over the past couple years — games I had always taken for granted, it was good to get the win as ugly as the team played at times. It was exciting to see Wall take and hit the game winner, and I really believe that this team will continue to grow and improve throughout the season. But we are YOUNG and have a LOT to learn!
This was a great game for a young team. I noticed a lot of bumping, hip checking and slapping at the ball when we penetrated. The refs were letting them play and the physical nature of the game seemed to catch us off guard. It is going to be like that night in night out. We have far more talent than most so the only way to even that out is by trying to out tough & out hustle us.
Could someone tell me when was the last time they saw a team make 15 THREES 15 and loose. Down 18 with such a young team and still pull out the WIN is just amazing. I think young(talented) teams need more “lunch pail” games(tough physical with no quarter ask for and none givin) than blowouts.
We should all remember that the returning players are use to losing this type of game and the freshman have probably never been in that situation before. So this was a GREAT learning experience which will help us come March. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR GO HOME.
I predict that the Wall shot will make the top 10 plays of the day on ESPN. That will be two games and two top ten plays. This will be a highlite reel team. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR GO HOME!!!!
Miami was on fire, yet the cats won. Very, very impressive as each of you noted. And this could be the start of Wall’s legacy at Kentucky. How clutch was he
Just got a cold mountain dew(lol). Getting ready for 24hrs of college BB. Sportcenter just showed us much love with a nice comment from Bilas. I LOVE COLLEGE BB. Going to stay up late watching some games. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR GO HOME
Everybody already said what I would have said…
GREAT GAME to learn from. Great determination from our players.
They told Coach “we’re not losing”… and they didn’t!
Just now watching the game. Thank heavens for technology! You guys have about covered it all, not much for me to say. However, being a woman I do have a few things. I listened to the first half at work and I decided I would watch the second half when I got home. I decided to watch the whole game because I wanted to see those 3’s that Winthorne was launching. We neeed to defend the 3 and make a few ourselves. I thought the guys seems a little confused the first half, liked Cal’s word better. I thought Wall spent a lot of time on the floor, thanks to Miami mistreating him! Two things that impressed me. Wall’s dunk, it was like he was floating on a cloud. I know no one was around him, but it sure was pretty. If you can, watch it again. Then, and then, Cousins rebound from the floor. The boys didn’t give up. The previous two coaches would have lost this game even with this talent. Miami deserves credit for keeping the game going and deserved to win. I hate to see that, but we deserved it also..we are Kentucky! The last shot, holy moly, Mr. Wall you deserve a gold star. If I had watched this at home when it was going on I probably would have had a heart attack. I can’t wait for the rest of the season, I can see a lot of vacation time on Mon. Tues, Wed and Fridays being used to get home in time to watch the games. GO CATS!
WOW!!! I Agree Linda we lose this game in the past 3-4 years, Alot of heart form this team, Can’t preach It enough,Hedge out strong’ stay with the man switch if your man is side to side get help on the back side on a pick and roll..Big Cuz and bledsoe Hopefuly won’t make that mistake again In clutch time..But you can’t stop It everytime, If you could Carl Malone and John Stockton wouldn’t be Hall of Famers…We did a great Job Helping on the Pick and Roll..But when you hedge out on the ball you can’t leave the shooter….Should be a great learning game for our bigs in that aspect…I’m so glad they can learn from a W and not be down and out over a lose…welcome to college guys, everyone is going to bring they’re A game..Keep playing hard and you will make BBN PROUD!!!GO BIG BLUE!!!!!
I”m Sorry its Karl Malone..LOL..Don’t want the mail man mad at me..LOL…GO CATS!!! GO BIG BLUE!!!
I think it was a big learning game for this team. And the most important lesson they learned was how to win a tough game
