Wall puts on a show for all to enjoy
By LARRY VAUGHT
John Wall was expected to put on a show — and he did.
The talented freshman point guard lived up to his enormous hype with a spectacular debut for the Wildcats in a 117-52 exhibition victory over Clarion University Friday night. He had 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, went 6-for-7 at the foul line, handed out nine assists, pulled off four rebounds, made a steal and even blocked a shot.
I knew how good John Wall was, but he is the real deal. I hope you can keep him a year or two because he is in a different league,” said Clarion coach Ron Righter.
Wall didn’t get to play in UK’s exhibition win over Campbellsville Monday because of a NCAA mandated penalty that will also force him to miss the regular-season opener against Morehead State University. So while it was no surprise he was anxious to play, it was a little startling that a player projected to perhaps be the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA admitted he was nervous before a game against a Division II team.
“I always get nervous, but I really wanted to be our there and see how it was in front of all the fans having coach Cal telling me what to do,” Wall said.
Of course, Wall was also telling coach John Calipari what to do — and UK’s coach loved it.
“Three or four times he should have passed the ball and he didn’t,” Calipari said. “He knew it before I told him. There were times he was moving so fast he was not recognizing who was open. He should have passed ball and didn’t. He knew it. At times he was moving so fast he was not recognizing who was open.
“But here is what I really appreciated. He was telling me we have to get Patrick (Patterson) shots. At the end, he was saying to get the ball to DeMarcus (Cousins). That is a leader. He wants to keep them all happy and involved.”
Wall said that is simply part of his role as the team’s point guard.
“I want to see our best player get the ball and Patrick is our best player,” Wall said. “Once you get the two big guys going, they play better defense, run the court and do everything better. We have to get Patrick the ball and get him going. That’s my job.”
While it might be fun to speculate how Wall’s speed and quickness ranks with UK’s other past speedsters such as Dwight Anderson, James Blackmon, Dicky Beal and Rajon Rondo, former UK All-American Kenny Walker says to stop speculating.
“I played with James and watched Dicky and Rajon. I didn’t see Dwight Anderson play, but I can’t believe he could accelerate with the ball like John Wall could. Blackmon couldn’t. Beal couldn’t. Rondo couldn’t. This kid is just special,” Walker said.
Oscar Combs, the founder of The Cats’ Pause, says he has never seen a better point guard at Kentucky than Wall. “I didn’t see Ralph Beard play if you want to go back that far, but in the last 35 or 40 years, there has not been a better point guard here. This kid can do it all and makes it look so easy. If there has ever been a one-and-done player worth taking, he is the one,” Combs said.
He is.
Take the time during the second half when he grabbed a defensive rebound, raced to the offensive end, wrapped the ball around his back and finished the play while getting fouled.
Or the time early in the game when Wall easily beat Clarion’s press by himself and then whipped a pass to DeMarcus Cousins for an easy score.
Or the time Wall drove left, hung in the air and whipped a nifty pass to Darnell Dodson for another easy basket.
He also showed he could hit a 3-point shot by nailing his first attempt and he showcased his leaping ability with his first dunk after a drive and dish by Darius Miller.
However, what is even more impressive is his desire to be perfect, sort of like Kentucky junior Patrick Patterson. When Wall made a mistake — and he had XX turnovers — you could tell he was upset with himself. If he got beat defensively, he was upset.
Wall played as intently on defense as he did when he was running the court with the speed of a lightning bolt and teammates have no choice but to follow. If they don’t run and go all out, he’ll leave them behind. He attacks the basket so ferociously that teammates can’t be sluggish. They have to attack, too.
“That is the same John Wall we see every day,” senior Perry Stevenson said.
So on a scale of one to 10, how good is Wall?
“One hundred,” Stevenson said. “Really. He’s that good.”
But he doesn’t want anyone to tell him that.
“You can’t drink the poison just because you have one good game,” Wall said. “I have to stay humble and focused. I try to stay focused. If you drink the poison and believe you are great, then you will be on the end of the bench.
“I don’t read a lot of things because I don’t want anything to go to my head. Teammates don’t like a guy like that. I might read something saying that I need work on my jump shot and that will make me go in the gym at 11 (at night) to work on it. I feed more off criticism than compliments.”
That’s what great players do and after just one exhibition game, there’s no doubt about Wall becoming a great player because he already is one.
There is something really, really special about John Wall that goes beyond the fact that he is such a great player. I am talking about his attitude…here is a guy who is already the #1 pick in the draft, who is going to be a millionaire many times over, and who is worried about getting his teammates involved. I also really like the way he interacts with his teammates — I mean you can just watch and see that he is positive and a great teammate. Take all of this, and combine it with the fact that he is perhaps the most physically gifted and talented player to ever wear the blue and white…? I mean, I honestly have to pinch myself as a UK fan and say, “holy crap, we have John Wall on our team”!
I listened to the game tonight on the radio while at work. Two plays stand out in my mind. The behind the back pass to his left hand and lay up and when he was going left, hanging in the air and passed the ball. When the announcers described the back pass to his left hand I said, wow, shades of Maravich, my favorite college player. A few moments later the announcers said the same thing. I still remember watching Pistol Pete play and seeing those socks down around his ankles. This young man is every thing Kentucky has been waiting for many years. I don’t remember ever being excited about an individual player like this since Mashburn and then Rajon and then Patrick. He is so young, so gifted and so good and so considerate of his teammates. He is another good representative for our team. He is someone who may not wear the blue and white for long but who will leave a very lasting impression on Kentucky basketball. I would love to see him play at Kentucky for more than one year, but I will enjoy this year immensely. Win or lose it is gonna be fun just like Coach Cal says. I taped the game tonight and will watch it tomorrow. I will burn it and keep it and every game this year forever! I have to have something to watch when I’m in a nursing home, I don’t want to be like those other old biddies! GO CATS! Make this old lady smile through March!
Why the NBA forces a guy of that obvious talent to go to college is crazy. He is truely amazing. I’m glad he is on our team. He showed he is a better shooter that advertised. He also has a smooth free throw stroke. I just laugh when I think of what would be if this team stayed together for 2 years. Derrick Anderson said they remind him of the 96 team. It’s to early to say that but I see why he feels that way. There are no players on that team that can’t play. I mean really play. The second five will be able to beat most teams by years end. I do believe they may struggle at times but this is a special bunch. I am about to drink the Koolaide. A word to the BBN fill the arena go see this team play, rarely will we see this much talent on one team again. I lived the dream with the Cats in the nineties and saw them live on every stage. I was weened on the 78 champion team and watched that special group of Players from their freshman years. I honestly believe reguardless of what they accomplish that this team can be that special if they continue to buy in and grow as a team. Wall is just AMAZING. What a thrill it will be to say “I watched him play for free and got his autograph” years from now god willing!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR STAY HOME.
PS Get well son Mrs. Patterson
Great article Larry. This really was a tremendous start to John’s season. This is only preseason game 1 for him and he performed better than most point guards do in March….Of their senior year.
Really good points here by all. He is going to be so much fun to watch and enjoy. And like Patrick, he’s great in the media room
The thing I also noticed about him is he knows where the cameras are. He is trying to hype the crowd all the while playing at an incredible level. That is true NBA “swag” as my 15 yr old would say. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GO BLUE OR STAY HOME
Wall looks to be everything he was hyped up to be. I am anxious to see him against some of the better teams. If I were wont to criticize, I would have to say he can’t drive through 3 players every time. He tried that several times and succeeded but there were 2 or 3 times when he should have kicked it off to one of the wings. I believe however that all that will come with time. But how many college freshmen could score 27 points in their first game against anybody?
Right on Doug. Think that is what Cal was pointing out to him. But for the first game, he was really good. And he does believe in hyping the crowd to help his team. I like that
Great job to all players… Remember John has other playes on the court and with the threat of Cousins, Patterson, Dodson Orton and others….Who do you guard? Keep up the good play at the point and don’t forget TEAM……..Wall will be special come SEC play…..GO Big Blue
I think he is on board with you based on how he tried to get ball to Pat and DeMarcus last night
