Macy’s insights on Cal’s Cats
By LARRY VAUGHT
Former University of Kentucky All-American Kyle Macy has been able to watch numerous teams across the country play in recent years in his role as a college basketball radio and TV analyst.
Last year he noted numerous times that Kentucky just was not as athletic or talented as most top teams in the country and could not compete on a nightly basis with the nation’s best teams. Now his opinion seems to have changed.
Question: Last year you talked about seeing other teams play and how much more athletic they were than Kentucky. Has that problem now been corrected at Kentucky?
Macy: “Definitely. Yes.”
Question: What do you envision as the team’s biggest strength going into the season?
Macy: “Athletic ability, speed size and quickness.”
Question: What area, or areas, of concern do you maybe have going into the season?
Macy: “How they will shoot from the outside when teams zone.”
Question: Who are the unsung players who could make a huge difference for the team this year?
Macy: “Hard to call any of them unsung but Darnell Dodson would be the closest. He could become a zone buster!!! Jon Hood’s athletic ability is underrated a little I think too.”
Question: Is being ranked fourth in the preseason AP poll an accurate gauge of what kind of season UK should have?
Macy: “I think anywhere in the top four or five at this time is all right. They may not be there yet, but if they continue to work hard while gaining game experience, they have a shot at playing in Indy (in the Final Four).”

Macy will also be coaching the new Kentucky Stallions this season. For information on the now professional basketball team go to www.bluegrassstallions.com.
Some of my earliest memories of UK basketball are of Kyle Macy, especially the “socks” ritual at the foul line. It is so great how he has continued to be connected to the university and contribute to the program. Thanks for all you do Kyle! GO BIG BLUE!!!
Macy really is true blue. Join us one Sunday morning on WLAP. He is great to work with and he knows his basketball
Macy was my all time favorite guard at U.K. He was as smooth running a team as you could get.
And almost 30 years later I think he could still lead a team and be effective. He was that good
