Calipari trusts Martin Newton’s experience

By LARRY VAUGHT

John Calipari had a lot of choices he could have made when he picked his director of basketball operations at Kentucky. However, he found a name familiar to Kentucky fans — Martin Newton.

For the past 13 years, Martin Newton was Nike’s college basketball manager after spending the previous 13 working in sales and promotions for Converse. He’s also the son of former UK athletics director C.M. Newton and has worked as a color analyst for the UK TV Network.

Calipari said he couldn’t trust someone 24 or 25 years of age just trying to break into college basketball to have this job.

“He is responsible for everything that is going on in our office. He has my schedule along with my assistant Lunetha (Pryor). They both coordinate where I am and what I am supposed to do. They will text me the night before here is what you have tomorrow.

“You can’t miss the Rotary. You can’t miss Kiwanis. You can’t miss a meeting or breakfast you are supposed to be at. The 25-year-old who went out the night before will say, ‘Coach, I am sorry. I just forgot to tell you.’ No. You can’t forget to tell me. That is the biggest donor we have. I was supposed to be at breakfast. At Kentucky, you can’t do that. At other places you don’t have as much stuff going on.

“Martin comes in with a wealth of knowledge of Kentucky. He lived in Lexington. He knows all the people. He helps me from stubbing my toes, which I have at times. His job is to make sure when I am walking in that I know who is who and he does it. His background in Kentucky has been good for us.”

Newton plans to make changes to Calipari’s TV show. But more importantly, he wants to make sure he finds ways to help keep the coach accessible to UK fans.

“Cal has shown a lot with social networking and accessibility. If you are going to have a program that is about the state and that is what you are going to tout, then you have to be accessible. People have got to be able to touch you and feel you. You can’t put yourself up on a pedestal and have everyone below  you,” Newton said. “A great example was camping out with Big Blue Madness people. He was right there with them. That is the kind of things we are going to do. We want more accessibility where you are out touching the fans and stuff like that.

“We are going to work with Nike and make sure from a uniform and footwear standpoint that we are the most relevant, hip, out of culture team that there is. You have to respect that past because a lot went into building that, but we have to represent the future and what these kids ages 12 to 18 are all about now.”

Don’t look for Newton to tinker with things like pregame introductions. He calls those “small potatoes” and that he’s looking more at the “big picture” items with Calipari.

“How do we continue to make this a strong brand within Kentucky but expand those borders. Just look at the marketing pitch already. Everything is about one world, one big blue nation. We are trying to do stuff in China. We are trying to do stuff in New York, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, Miami and all these markets where Nike and others focus on that Kentucky has kind of forgot about. We have to get in those areas and think outside the box and take different approaches to build that brand in those areas. That’s my job. To help John think outside the box.”

  • Jim Boyers:

Larry, very interesting article. Apparently, when it comes to coordinating millions of little details every day, Cal’s staff has to rival the President’s. My hat is off to them.

Are there plans for another season of Inside Kentucky Basketball this fall? I haven’t seen or heard anything about it.

  • larryvaught:

NOt that I know of, but I will try to check

  • KY_Wildcat_AL:

Coach Cal is great because he surrounds himself with great
people… on and off the court. Another great article, Larry, as always. My hat’s off to his wife, she has to be a strong individual to accept John’s schedule.

  • Larry:

She would have to be. No doubt about that. He seems to be gone somewhere all the time

  • Glen Haney:

Your right Larry! Going out and meeting the public as Coach Cal and the players have done is so important to the fans.

  • larryvaught:

It is huge and has been missing in this program overall. Cal may have faults, but meeting and greeting the public is not one of them

  • Tom Pope:

Larry: As usual, a really good article on the interworkings of Kentucky basketball. Martin Newton is an outstanding person who will really help John Calipari, I’m glad Coach Cal has surrounded himself with such competent people with high integrity.

  • larryvaught:

I like trying to share these stories because I think fans like to know more than just the stats

  • Ukhoopshysteria:

Given Martin’s family pedigree and his experience working with Converse and Nike, I couldn’t be happier with Cal’s choice as Dir of Basketball Operations. He has a wealth of knowledge to offer coach…everything from the ins and outs of Lexington to the advice he can seek from C.M. to his ties with the world’s best athletic appareal company. The man is made for the job. This will only help cement Cal as on of the all time great coaches when all is said and done.

  • larryvaught:

It really does seem like a good fit and Martin is thrilled to have the postion. He has a lot of interesting ideas

  • Matt:

Martin Newton is a jerk and crook if UK does not watch out he will bring them down

  • Linda:

    always one in the bunch

  • Brett Carter:

Take the negativity somewhere else Matt. As always, another great article from Mr. Vaught. I truthfully look forward to reading Vaught’s Views everyday.

  • north carolina cat fan:

Martin is a good dude and right on…UK has to be relevant to the 12-18 year olds who only know Duke and UNC…it will be uncomfortable, but the program is finally on the right track…UK/Cal/Nike/LeBron…it doesn’t get any hotter than that! The dynasty will return to its glory and this is just the first step…Go Cats!

  • larryvaught:

Have to strongly disagree Matt.I have had nothing but good experiences with Martin and folks I know respect what he has done in the business world. As north carolina cat fan noted, UK has to be relevant with today’s youth. Martin can do that.
And thanks LInda and Brett. Matt can have his opinion, but like you I disagree

  • Daniel Rossiter:

Matt, your cover is blown. We all know you are Jerry Tipton, so stop with the negativity. =) Great article Larry. I didn’t realize Newton was responsible for so much. Fabulous hire by Cal. Helps to have Martin’s old man back in the loop too. Coach Cal has the Midas touch right now, no doubt.

  • Jimmy:

    Larry,

Do you think Wall will play this year? Any suspension?

  • dandycat:

    Larry

Have u ever thought about doing a weekly vlog? Your insight and opinions are very valued among th big blue nation and just thought it would be something I personally would look toward to each week. Also maybe it would give Uncle Gary something else to do during the week. Lol.

  • It will be nice to see UK competing and being a true contender again and the association with Lebron just puts UK that much more in the spotlight. Especially once Lebron starts totting UK apparel and doing camps on campus.

  • waynecat28:

As a younger cat fan I have been wanting Uk to appeal a bit more to the younger crowd. Like uniforms we need to change thos becuse belive it or not reqruits look at stuff like that and shoes. I know a lot of folks dont like headbands but it is the trend it is the cool thing to do I say sport theme baby! Rupp will be rocking again im so excited about are future I have been a fan my whole life soumthing past to me by my father I love the Blue and White. Cal is great for this job im so gladd he is hear I respect what he has done this off season being away frome his family reaching out to the fans it means so much to us. Larry whene you talk to coach Cal again tell him thank you so much for all he has done. GO BIG BLUE ! 4 Life

  • larryvaught:

Daniel, great point about having C.M. involved again. That can only help.
And Waynecat I think a lot of younger fans feel just as you do.I think we are going to see a lot of very cool things and I am sending your email to Martin so he can pass it along to Cal.
Dandycat, I will ask Gary about the vlog. thanks for the kind words.
CobbyCobb, let me tell you players are still talking about LeBron. That is a huge plus.
As for John Wall, so many unknowns it is hard to say. But I still have to believe UK has been on top of this and everything will be fine

  • MDN:

Larry, just wanted to say thanks for you positive perspective on UK sports. There is no room for negativity @ UK anymore, so it is refreshing to read comments from fans who are excited about the program!
Glad Martin is finally getting the acknowledgement he deserves. He is a great man, with a great passion for the game, for UK, and for succcess.
UK basketball is being recreated, not just restored. This is a whole new era – so let’s continue to support it!!
    Thanks again!

  • larryvaught:

I do want this to be a positive spot. Not that we will ignore problems or bad play, but why not try to focus on the good things and information. I like sharing stories about coaches and players, but I also like giving folks just like you a chance to respond. I think Martin is a terrific guy too and is going to be help Cal do some very innovate things

  • Linda:

I want to agree with WDN and the others that your perspective on the UK programs is so refreshing. It is good to see the positive things with the program, not the negative things and the stories that other writers want to dig up and try to make something out of nothing. You know who you are Tipton and Forde. Jerry great job! The inside stories with the players past and present help give us back our pride and love of all things Blue. We appreciate your thoughtfulness toward the Big Blue Nation, your insight and research when you post a story. It is a shame that ‘bigger’ names don’t try to do the same thing. GO BIG BLUE!

  • larryvaught:

Thanks very much Linda. I love being able to share the inside stories
