Orton knows, and likes, numbers

By LARRY VAUGHT

Daniel Orton could put up some big numbers for Kentucky during his basketball career. If he does, he certainly should be able to keep up with the numbers, too.

After all, the UK freshman is considering a major in accounting, not exactly the typical major for most Division I basketball players.

“I could possibly see myself as an accountant, but I don’t know what I want to do for sure. I love numbers and love dealing with numbers. I took a small course in high school and enjoyed that. I am especially interested in numbers and money,” said Orton.

Maybe he can combine that love eventually by worrying about a NBA contract.

“The NBA is the ultimate dream. I have no timetable. My brother has a set timetable for me, but I do not have one for me. How it plays out, it plays out. It is easier that way. Rather than say I have a year to prepare for this or that, I give myself as much time as I need by setting any timetables,” Orton said.

He’s also not worried about how the number of minutes will play out for coach John Calipari’s talented team.

“We really are getting along. Once practice starts, we might be having a couple of fights, but you never know. We may get along great during the season and I think we will. We have a great nucleus of guys with Patrick (Patterson) as the leader. I think everything from playing time to scoring to whatever will work out. As long as win, the other numbers really don’t matter,” Orton said.

So theyre “really getting along but may start fighting when practice starts”? Odd choice of words. Sure he meant it to come out different.

Either way this team is gonna be scary good and I absolutely cannot wait til Friday! Even better – my roommate just bought a 55 inch tv… Wall in HD – score

  • larryvaught:

think he just meant fighting for playing time and positions on the court — and I would hope he’s right. Want to see that intensity.
And what a great roommate you have to provide you with that type of setup for this season

  • Jim Boyers:

    IS IT FRIDAY YET?

  • Mack:

The more I learn about the indvidual members the more I excited I get about the TEAM!

  • larryvaught:

Mack I feel the same way. I have really enjoyed being around these new players. they are all very, very cool and fun

  • UKFMLY:

    Larry,

Do you think Coach will feature more basketball and less fireworks at Madness Sat? Also who are your preseason starting 5. Mine is PP DC DM JW & surprise PS. I know Stevenson seams like a stretch but I really believe he has more abitlity than he has shown.

  • UKFMLY:

I know Madness is Fri. I camped for my tickets!!!!

  • larryvaught:

i hope more basketball. i will take wall, pat, miller, cousins and my surprise is liggins

  • Daniel DeMuth:

Wall, PPat, Cousins, Miller, and my surprise is Bledsoe. How frustrated do you think fans are going to be coming out of the gate? The expectations have to be held in check for a bit til some of these guys really start to grasp the system. I just don’t want that ever growing ballon that has been filled up with National Championship/Final Four predictions to burst after the first week or so.

  • larryvaught:

I don’t think you have to worry Daniel. I just don’t see that balloon bursting too early. Your starting five would not shock me. I just thought Cal might not open with 3 freshmen, but then again if they are the best, he will have no problem doing that

  • jim:

Fights are common during practice, especially on good teams. If you don’t have players that think they are better than anyone else and won’t back down in practice, how do you expect them to stand up at game time?

  • larryvaught:

    Great point Jim.
Pretty sure UK’s 1996 team had some of that and know the 1978 team did
