For months Zan Payne has thought about joining the University of Kentucky basketball program where his father, Kenny, is an assistant coach under John Calipari.

Today Lexington Catholic announced that Zan Payne would walk on at UK next season. The school announced his decision via a news release.

The 6-4, 195-pound Payne averaged 19.3 points per game last season and scored 1,282 points — 14th most in school history. He also finished as the school’s fourth all-time leading rebounder with 934.

He had knee surgery at the end of his senior season and will use a medical redshirt year at UK next season.

“We are very excited and proud that Zan has chosen to play for the University of Kentucky,” Lexington Catholic coach Brandon Salsman said in the release. “He is an incredible athlete with a very high motor on the court. His work ethic will serve him well at the next level. He lived in the gym and was constantly working to get better. I have no doubt this will continue.”

  1. I hope he is a walk on. Not sure he warrants a scholorship. Redshirting a year is a good idea.

  2. Home grown kid? I’ll take him. I wish him all the best and hope he shows he can “get er” done at UK. Need more like him, guys who will play with their hearts, and stick around for 4 years.

  3. I hope he has sound fundamentals and plays with energy in a bench role. If he will play defense, rebound, and be a willing passer, he could find some playing time in time. Maybe a couple of years down the road he could be a starter.
