Boyle County track, Barbasol Championship, Miss Teen Kentucky all part of Thursday radio schedule for me

Boyle County coach Brent Wagner got a hug and kiss from his mother after his teams won state track titles Saturday.

By LARRY VAUGHT

Boyle County has won three straight girls state track championships and this year added a boys title.

Coach Brent Wagner will join me on “Focus On Title Town” Thursday at 9:15 a.m. on WKYB (107.5 FM, wkybfm.com).

The Boyle girls scored in 15 of 18 events and scored 84 points. The previous two years they scored 87 and 88 points and continued that amazing consistency this year.

The Boyle girls won two events but got the title because they had athletes finish between fourth and sixth in 12 events.

The boys won by 45 POINTS by scoring in 14 of 18 events. They had four events where two athletes scored.

The 4×200 relay team of Grayson Rahbany, Reese Smith, Landen Bartleson and Chris Duffy set a state record in 1:28.76 and Jackson Cox came from way, way back to win the 800-meter run by inches in a thrilling finish.

GOLF

I’m also going to be talking a lot of golf Thursday.

Jessica Cornelius

It will start at 7:30 a.m. on WPBK (102.9 FM, wpbkfm.com) with Jessica Cornelius of Stanford. She’s a former State Amateur champion who will help coordinate the walking scorers at the Barbasol Championship in July. That’s the PGA Tour stop coming to Jessamine County in July.

Cornelius has worked as a walking scorer at The Players Championship as well as the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. She has a number of signed golf ball from players she has worked with including Sergio Garcia, Jason Day, Bubba Watson and Kentucky’s J.B. Holmes among others. She’s also been the scorer for Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson in the final round of The Players Championship.

She’ll chat about her experiences as well as volunteer opportunities for others during the Barbasol Championship.

If that’s not enough golf, then Brooks Downing will join me on WKYB about 9:35 a.m. for more Barbasol Championship talk. HIs company is helping promote and plan the event and he’ll be a wealth of information.

He’s also a former sports information director at the University of Kentucky who worked with the basketball team and we will talk some UK basketball as well.
