Imagine someone taking exception to something that ESPN college basketball analyst Dan Dakich did.
Seems like maybe one time I did (wink, wink) during the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
This time it was Michigan State coach Tom Izzo — one of college basketball’s most respected coaches — that Dakich infuriated. He also has demanded an apology from Dakich.
Ironically, Izzo was upset with Michigan State fans for their chants directed toward Dakich during Tuesday’s win on ESPN that Dakich worked. At that time he did know Dakich had tweeted this to a Michigan State fan: “Sparty not only whines but now just dumb!! Couldn’t get into UM??” That tweet now has been deleted.
Remember that Dakich’s son is a senior guard at Michigan — and was on the team in 2014 when UK beat Michigan to reach the Final Four
“Somebody read me his tweets. Social media. And if I would have known that before the game, I would have embarrassed myself almost as much as he embarrassed himself and I would have led the chants because calling us whiners and all that is kind of unprofessional,” Izzo said after the game.
“That is a disappointment and that is ridiculous and I think it’s funny because I’ve got no respect for him for that. You can read it, you can tweet it, you can do whatever you want with it. But Twitter got him in trouble, and I’m surprised ESPN would let somebody say something like that that works for them.
“Danny owes our fans and our students an apology. And I probably won’t get it. I’ve always gotten along with Dan, but as you know, it seems like this year a lot of people have been mad at me, but I would have loved to get in that Izzone and joined those chants if I was on Twitter. Thank God, I’m not. Thank God some of my friends are.”
Dakich did reach out to Izzo Wednesday with a phone call that izzo didn’t answer and this tweet:
“Always had unreal respect for Coach Izzo MSU hoops+its fans! Reached out to Tom this AM to clear the air..Look forward 2 that conversation.”
Dakich is scheduled to work the Michigan State-Purdue game Saturday.
