I spent part of my Christmas day watching a documentary that former UK player Cameron Mills and long-time sports broadcaster Dick Gabriel put together on the 1996 UK national championship team.
Thursday from 7:30-8 a.m. Mills will join Tim Estes and myself on WPBK (102.9 FM, wpbkfm.com) to talk about this project and other UK basketball related items.
The documentary was fantastic. Two things came through crystal clear in the show. First, the players were committed to only one thing that season and it was winning a national title. It was much like UK’s 2015 team that went 38-0 but lost in the Final Four. This team had so much talent, yet they all sacrificed to make the team better.
Second, it’s still obvious how much these players respect coach Rick Pitino. Watching the players interact with their coach in the documentary and the thank-you Ron Mercer had for Pitino was very touching. Pitino is just as fond of them and even if you are no longer a Pitino fan, I would recommend any UK fan find a way to watch this documentary about what was probably the most talented team ever at UK.
If you have a question for Mills, let us know or just call or text us Thursday morning.
