LEXINGTON, Ky. – Yet again, the Kentucky Wildcats have reached their collective goal of a 3.0 department-wide grade-point average.
UK Athletics’ scholarship athletes combined for a 3.143 GPA during the fall semester, marking the ninth straight semester they have surpassed the 3.0 threshold. The high marks come on the heels of a cumulative department-wide GPA of 3.157 in the spring.
“Our students continue to excel in the classroom, taking advantage of the opportunities they have to grow both academically and athletically,” Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said. “Academics are central to our mission here at UK and I’m proud this level of achievement has become the norm. I want to congratulate our students for their dedication.”
Eighteen of UK’s 20 teams had GPAs of 3.0 or better and six were at 3.5 or better: women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s swimming and diving, softball, women’s basketball, and gymnastics. Women’s tennis (3.653) and women’s swimming and diving (3.512) led the way among women’s teams, while men’s golf (3.540) and baseball (3.307) led UK’s men’s teams.
“Our coaches, our staff and especially our CATS (Center for Academic and Tutorial Services) counselors and tutors have made academics an important part of our department’s culture and I’m grateful for that,” Barnhart said. “They give our students the support they need and our students take it from there.”
Along with the department-wide success, individual students are shining as well. During the fall semester, 64 Wildcats had perfect GPAs of 4.0. Additionally, 33 current and former Wildcats received their bachelor’s degrees at UK’s December Commencement ceremony last week.
Last month also brought news of UK Athletics’ continued success according to NCAA graduation statistics. UK has broken or tied the school record in Graduation Success Rate in each of the 12 years the measure has existed.
