The annual Kentucky versus Louisville game became my “Final Four” December 29, 2001 and 15 years later it feels very much the same.
It was the first college game Rick Pitino would coach in Rupp Arena after leaving UK four years earlier and first time back as head coach of our biggest rival UL.
That week emotions were running high in the Commonwealth and for my family they were especially elevated. We had moved back to Kentucky the same year Pitino left. And less than 12 hours after tip off we would be moving again … on planes for 20 hours of flights with my husband and three young children to Hong Kong SAR, China for the next four years.
I knew I couldn’t miss this game because it would be the last of many goodbyes; in some ways the perfect send-off. And it wouldn’t be complete without our best friends from college joining us. We made a day of it first with dinner then to the game sitting next to our favorite people in section 36, UK Alumni.
Years later we still have a tradition of attending this game in Rupp with the same best friends. Last night we watched together in our home. We were hoping for the same outcome as 2001.
