Boom Williams declaring for draft

Maybe Mark Stoops wasn’t sure what junior running back Boom Williams was going to do about the NFL draft, but Williams knew.

He announced after Kentucky’s loss to Georgia Tech in the Taxslayer Bowl that he was going to declare for the draft and bypass his final year at UK.

He said he made the decision Friday night so he would not have any distractions on Saturday. He also did not tell anyone else to avoid distractions for them.

Williams got only 11 carries for 35 yards Saturday but during the regular season he rushed for 1,135 yards and seven scores while averaging over 7 yards per carry. He finished his career as Kentucky’s seventh all-time career rusher with 366 carries for 2,511 yards (next is 2,618), just the eighth player in school history with more than 2,000 yards.

Williams was only the second player at UK yto have back-to-back seasons of at least 850 yards (the other one was Sonny Collins.)

  1. I hope Boom does well at the next level, if he gets there. Another year at UK would have been good for UK. I will miss him in the UK backfield in 2017.
