On signing day for UK’s 2014 recruiting class, I asked former UK quarterback Freddie Maggard who was perhaps the sleeper in the class.
Remember this was before Maggard became the UK media star he is now. But his answer proves why he is such an expert on UK football because without hesitation he said Alabama lineman Bunch Stallings.
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops certainly is on the Stallings bandwagon.
“Bunchy is doing a lot of good things. He’s a physical guy but he’s very athletic and quick-twitch for a big guy,” Stoops said. “He’s been doing some good things.
“I’m pleased with Logan (Stenberg) as well. He’s a big guy. Inside, it takes some experience because there a lot of things that happen very, very quickly inside. Experience really helps you. We have a nice rotation in there with some guys with some strength.”
Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran has seen Stallings dramatically improve since he got to Kentucky.
“He’s so athletic and what we’ve got to do is we’ve just got to tone down Bunchy. Sometimes he gets discombobulated with his footwork sometimes,” Gran said. “But he’s got power and he’s so athletic that he can do some really good things.
“There’s a good battle there and that’s good when you have competition. Both of them are going to play, so he’s been playing well.”
