FRANKLIN, Ohio — University of Kentucky deputy athletics director DeWayne Peevy said UK’s non-conference basketball schedule will be officially released Monday and will not contain many surprises.
Peevy did tell those at the Ohio UK Convention here Saturday that Kentucky would open the season against a team that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Games with Kansas, Michigan State, Hofstra, Arizona State, North Carolina and Louisville have already been announced.
“There will be a Bluegrass Showcase at Rupp Arena that will have four games,” said Peevy. “We are going to have a young team, so the schedule will be a challenge. It’s a very competitive schedule. I think we pushed the envelope a little bit, but we wanted to be fair to our team to get them ready for postseason play.”
He also announced that UK would open Southeastern Conference play in late December.
“We will skip New Year’s Eve weekend. We will be off then,” Peevy said.
He said the SEC schedule will likely be released in early August.
Peevy briefly discussed the work being done at Rupp Arena, including wi-fi for all in the area next season.
Former UK All-American Jack Givens asked Peevy is the work at Rupp Arena means that plans for a possible new UK basketball arena have ended.
“There is nothing off the table at this point,” Peevy said. “We are still in negotiations. Our contract (for Rupp Arena) runs out at the end of the 2017-18 season. Nothing is off the table. It’s a 40-year-old building.”
Fans liked his announcement that there would be no increase in ticket prices of K-Fund donations for basketball season.
“We want to grow the numbers, not the price,” Peevy said.
