LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky women’s basketball head coach Matthew Mitchell announced Wednesday that sophomore post player Alexis Jennings has requested a transfer and been granted a release from the program.

“I talked last week about needing to give our players a clear path forward in our program and it saddens us that Alexis did not see a path for her at Kentucky,” Mitchell said. “She alerted me today that she felt it was in her best interest to finish her career elsewhere and we owe her that opportunity. I appreciate her hard work the past two years and hope she finds success.

“The turnover we have had has not been easy on our players and it’s critical that we give them some stability. Part of that is getting a quality staff in place and I am confident we are going to do that in the coming days. Our focus continues to be on the players in the locker room and the recruits that we are confident would make great Wildcats.”

Jennings played in 33 games and started 18 last season. She’s the second player to transfer since the season ended and seventh since the start of the last school year. Kentucky also had all three assistant coaches leave after the season ended.

  1. wow, it really makes you wonder what is wrong, what is going on….

    1. This is just so, so bizarre

  2. No Linda, the wondering has to end. This man has single handedly destroyed, for possibly a few years to come, the nationally respected women’s program. Barney needs to get some stones and stop spinning that he expects MM to be able to reverse this and restore the program to stability. There is more smoke here than any of us can probably imagine, and it is amazing that no one is saying anything. Have none of these players or coaches been given exit interviews? MM needs to be FIRED immediately.

  3. Goodness gracious. I hate to hear this. Won’t they have to have open tryouts to even have enough players to have a team?

  4. I don’t understand how UK can continue to support Mitchell when it is pretty clear that he is the problem. Heck, he is the only one left. Why wasn’t something questioned a long time ago when he started going through one assistant after the other???

  5. Really hate say it, but I really think they need to fire Mitchell and start from the ground up.

  6. Someway,I think they need to get to the bottom of this before anyone is fired. There has to be a reason.
