The Lexington Legends will open their 16th season of baseball Thursday night April 7 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.  The Legends, class A affiliate of the World Series champion Kansas City Royals, will take on the Lakewood BlueClaws, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.  Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. (an hour earlier than for most 7:05 p.m.  games).  Former University of Kentucky basketball star Alex Poythress will sign autographs beginning as soon as the gates open until about 6:30 p.m.   He will throw a ceremonial first pitch at about 6:45 p.m.

Also before the game, World Series rings, commemorating the Royals’ win in the 2015 Series, will be presented to the Legends’ field staff.  J.J. Picollo, Royals’ vice president for baseball operations and assistant general manager for player personnel, will present the rings.

Fans will get their first look at the Legends’ new Bullpen Patio.  The 2,000-square-foot-deck, located down the right field line, will be open to all fans, and bar service will be available.

Every Thursday home game, including opening night, will be a Kentucky Ale Thirsty Thursday.  Beer and Pepsi products will sell for one dollar each.  New this year, every Thursday home game is also a Pepsi Bark in the Park night, and fans are welcome to bring their dogs to the game.   A two-dollar donation at the gate for each dog will benefit a local animal shelter.

Also this season, for the first time in the team’s 16-year history, the Legends are operating their own concessions rather than outsourcing, and have focused on affordability and a wide range of menu selections.  Legendary Concessions will offer new and unique options on burgers as part of a new menu, and that new menu will also include, among many other items, a fried bologna sandwich served on a glazed doughnut.   Fans will enjoy lower concession prices as well.

A Ford Fireworks show will follow the game.

“Opening night is always exciting,” said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea,  “and in addition to the new baseball season, this year we have some new attractions around the ballpark that will add to the fans’ enjoyment of Legends baseball.   We’re looking forward to the start of a great season.”
