Fans have a chance to watch the nation’s top-ranked junior play in Somerset Saturday and Sunday when 7-footer DeAndre Ayton and his Hlllcrest Academy of Arizona play two other teams loaded with top-rated playes.
Hill Crest will play Victory Prep of Texas and top 10 junior Jarred Vanderbilt Saturday at 9 p.m. at Pulaski County High School. On Sunday at 3 p.m., Ayton will go against Advance Prep International of Texas with standout juniors Billy Preston and Trevon Duvall.
Ayton recently had 52 points, 33 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in a game. He also has Kentucky as one of the school’s that he is most interested in.
Hillcrest coach Kyle Weaver says Ayton is unique for his size.
“He has that newer type of game where they all want to shoot 3’s. That Steph Curry type of game,” Weaver said. “He is still capable of going to the post but he loves going outside.
“He’s really turned into that stretch 4 in the NBA. He’s no longer just a center. He can truly play a 4 or 5. Once we get that ballhandling skill, he can be a Kevin Durant out there because he has that type of motor.”
